\VILLIAM \VHITWORTH, OF WVORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
GRATE.
SPECIFIfCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,775, dated July 12, 1892.
Application filed October 6, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WHIrwoRrH, of the city of Worcester, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Grates; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in furnace-grates.
The object of this invention is to produce a furnace-grate in which the bars may be operated to shake the ashes from beneath the fire supported on said grate.
The further object of my invention is to produce a grate having independently-operated bars which may be turned to dump the fire into the ash-pit.
The invention consists in the novelconstruction of the grate-frame and the combination therewith of the peculiar form of gratebars pivoted thereto, and suitable mechanism for operating said bars and the grate-frame, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a verticalsectional view of a portion of a furnace, showing the grate in position and indicating the operation of the same. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View of the same, portions of the gratebars being broken away to show the operating-cams. Fig. 3 represents a view of one end of a center grate-bar, showing the cams carried by a shaft and the shaker-handle inserted in a slot provided in the arm of the cam-shaft.
Similar numbers of reference designate co r-. responding parts throughout.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a strong iron frame adapted to sustain the grate-bars and the weight of the fire carried thereon. The sides of this frame 5 are provided with shafts 6 6, which are journaled in suitable bearings supported in the furnace-walls, the outer ends of either or both of these shafts being square to engage with a corresponding socket of a crank-handle by which the grate may be dumped, the rear end of this frame being supported by the brackets 7 7, secured to the rear wall of the furnace, while the front end of the frame is supported by the sliding rod 8,
Serial No. 407,892- (No model.)
10 is provided with the circular perforation 12 and cam-slots 13 and 14, extending through the thickness of the reinforced end of the bar, and the two center bars have corresponding segmental slots 15, through which the arm of the cam-shaft extends. The ends of the camshaft 16 are journaled in bearings near the front end of the frame 5, and the shaft extends through the circular perforations in the grate-bars, having cams 17 and 18 workingin the cam-slots 13 or 14 of alternating gratebars, the cams 17 working in the slots 13, while the earns 18 work in the slots 14:, so that when the shaft 16 is partially revolved the cams lift and depress the alternate grate-bars. The arm 19 is formed in part with or may be secured to the shaft 16-and depends there from, extending through the segmental slots 15 in the central bars and having a slot at its lower end, in which the inner end of the shaker-handle 20 engages and may be secured. By means of this handle 20 the shaft 16 is partially revolved first in one direction and then in the other, alternately lifting and depressing the grate-bars, as shown in Fig. 1, and shaking the ashes from beneath the fire.
It is obvious that the grate-bars 10 may be single, as shown, or two or more may be combined into one without departing from the spirit of my invention. I11 such case the cams 17 and 18 would be placed farther apart on the shaft and each duplex grate-bar would be operated in the same manner as the single ones.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a grate, the combination, with a suitable frame and a series of grate-bars pivoted on a shaft secured in said frame and having cam-slots formed in the frontportions thereof, of a pivoted shaft extending through perforations in the bars and having cams adapt ed to co-operate with the slots of the alternate bars and means for operating said shaft, a depending arm 19, secured to said shaft,
as described. I and a shake-handle 20, extending therefrom, IO 2. The eornbinati0n,with agrate-frame and adapted to rock said shaft 9, as and for the the bars 10, pivoted on the shaft 9, secured purpose described.
5 therein, and having the circular perforations WILLIAM WHITWORTH.
l2 and cam-slots 13 and 14, of a shaft jour- Witnesses: naled in said frame, extending through said JOSEPH A. MILLER,
perforations 12, and having cams 17 and 18, HENRY J. MILLER.
