UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
WILLIAM JENNINGS, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY. I
,G RATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,183, dated Novernber 8, 1881.
- Application filed June 14, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. JENNINGS, of New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Grates;
. and .I do hereby declare that the following is a vertical cross-section through one of the shafts.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the segmental sections; and Fig. 5 is a side view of the de vice complete. I
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to shaking and dumping grates for stoves and furnaces; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
111 the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the sides of the stove or furnace, and B B the detachable side rails, between which and the permanent sides boxes or bearings, (J G, are formed for the ends of the rock-shafts D D, upon which the grate-sections are mounted,
' the said rock-shafts being square in cross-section, as shown, and provided with cylindrical ends or journals mounted in the bearings above described. Each of the several rockshafts is provided with a series of segmental, permanent or adjustable castings, E F, of different diameters, the large and small castings being arranged alternate with each other, as shown. The said castings, when adjustable, are formed with square hubs projecting upon either side of the castings, as shown, so as to properly space the several segments or castings of which each grate-bar is constructed.
The segmental castings E F consist individually of thin plates, which, in order to insure lightness and cheapness, are provided with transverse openings or perforations G. The
L, pivoted to a bracket, M, at the front end of the furnace. It will be seen that by operating said lever the said rock-shafts with their intersecting segments are oscillated or vibrated, thus removing the ashes from the lower part of the fire-box or furnace to which the invention is applied. a
From the fbregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the
operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, convenient, durable, easily operated, and capable of being applied, with slight modifications, to nearly all stoves and furnaces now in use.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I 1. As an improvement in stoves or furnace grates, the combination of a series of rockshafts having segmental castings of different diameters arranged alternately thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stove or furnace grate, the combination of a series of parallel rock-shafts having flanged segmental castings, as herein described, with the mechanism for operating the said rock-shafts simultaneousl y,consistin g substantially of the horizontal connecting-rod K and bell-crank lever L, pivoted in suitable brackets, M, as set forth.-
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM GYROUS JENNINGS.
