Description
To all whom it may concern:
UNITED YSrlrrns PATENT OFFICE,
AriDnEWJ. LooMIs, or MADRID, NEW Youn.
Specification forming part of `Letters Patent No. 4 7,84 It, dated May 2'3, 1865.
Be it known that I, ANDREW' J. Looivrrs, of Madrid, St. Lawrence-county, State of New York, have made certainl new and useful lmf provements in Burglar-Alarms, or instruments intended to make an' alarm on the surrepti- -tiousI opening of a door and I do vhereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of` this specification, in which- -Fgure l is a front view or elevatiouot' the machine seen in position attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a sction of the same on the line mw,
Fig. l, showing the position of the spring which Yvibrates the hammer..
' Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in the twovgures.
` The object of this improvement is to provide detonating arrangement to be attached perparties supposed to be Within hearing.
It consists of a plate, A, properly secured to a door, B, and having upon it a nipple or stump, C, upon which -a percussion-cap is 'to l be placed. A hollow-in the end'of the nipple lmay contain an extra pellet of fulminate or a charge, or may lead toa charge-chamber asin ordinary nipples. Generally, it is thought thatxtlie report of a'well-charged cap will be4 sfuciently audible to answer the purpose intended by this device. The hammer D has a pivoted shaft, E, upon `which is wound a spiral spring, F, which. constantly`tends.to project the hammer toward the nipple. The spring is connected to the hammer-shaft E and the plate C, and the 'shaft and spring occupy a l small cylindrical recess inthe door'under Athe' plateA. 4 .Y
The whole apparatus consistsA of but threeV pieces and is about as simple as it can Wellbc hind the projection G and the door latched. A percussion-cap is then placed on the nipple,
and the apparatus is set for the detection of the opening of the door, which in Withdrawin g the hammer from the catch releases it to the action of' the spring and explodes the cap.
This does not form a safeguard against the opening of a door, but insures the notification of the fact to the party interested under ordi'- nary circumstances, which is all that I propose to do, as it is beyond my province to attem'pt to secure infallibility. It may Yalso be set in connection with places of 'valuable deposits, or so charged andattached to places in public situations as to afford publication to' theneighbors of any tampering with the door tion of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure byLettcrs Iatcnt, 1s-
The combination of the plate A, the ham.- mer, with its axial shaft E and spring F, the catch G,the whole arranged substantially .as
described, and applied in the `manner and'for the purpose specified. v
To the above specification of my improved burglar alarm 1 have signed my handv this 18th' day of February, 1865.
Witnesses: ANDREW .1.LOGMIS.
