UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPII G. SOISTMANN AND JAMES lV. PEPPER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA; SAID SOISTMANN ASSIGNOR TO SAID PEPPER.
DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,378, dated July 5, 1892. Application filed April 27, 1892- Serial No. l130,869. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom, t mfr/ y concern:
Be it known that we, ADOLPH G. SoIsT- MANN and JAMES W. PEPPER, citizens of the United States, both residing in the city and countyofPhiladelphia,StateofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, which improvement is fully set forth in the following' specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of a novel tightening device for a drum, as will be hereinafter set forth and definitely claimed.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a drum embodying our invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent verticalsections of portions thereof respectively on lines :t a; and y y, Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents a section of a portion on line z z, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correzo spending parts in the several iigures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a drum, which, excepting the features of our invention applied thereto, is ot' usual construction.
B designates heads, which are foi-ined ot" metal or othersuitable material, having openings therein for the passage of screws C, which enter the side of the body of the drum and retained thereon by means of nuts D on 3o the interior thereof, said heads beinggrooved on their outer faces toreceive the tighteningwires E, which where they contact with said heads are bent, as at E', said wires diverging and then passing over hooks F, which are formed on the nuts G, the latter engaging with the threaded ends of screws H, which are swiveled in sockets J, whose upper ends are provided with laterally-projecting feet K, which are fitted, respectively, upon the up- 4o per and lower bands L of the drum, it being' noticed that the wires E alternate from the hooks and heads, and thus extend in zigzag direction around the body of the drum.
In order to retain the wires on the heads, I
provide the latter-with caps M, which are titted over the portions E of the wires in said heads and retained in position by the heads of the screws C, it being noticed that by properly rotating the screws II, whose heads are convenient of access at the'onter ends of the 5o sockets J, the wires may be tightened or loosened, by which provision the drum-head may be adjusted, the means employed being strong, durable, inexpensive, elective, and practical. 5 5
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A drum provided with heads B, which are grooved to receive the wires or cords E, 6o formed with openings for the fasteningscrews C, and caps M, which cover the portion of the cords within said heads and are connected with the heads by means of said screws, substantially as described.
2. A drum provided with sockets J, having feet K, screws H, passed through said sockets, nut-s G, fitted to said screws, hooks F on said nuts, heads B, connected with the side of the dru in, and wires or cords E, passing from the 7o said hooks to said heads and connected therewith, substantially as described.
A drum having tightening wires or cords E, connected alternately with hooks F and heads B on the side of the body, said heads 75 receiving portions of said wires or cords and provided with caps M to retain the wires in place, said hooks being attached to nuts G, which are engaged by screws Il, the latter being swiveled in sockets J, attached by feet K 8o to the upper and lower bands of the drum, substantially as described.
