To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES S- Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los rtngelcs, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bull or Calf lVheels for ell-Rigs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bull or. calf wheels for well rigs, and pertains especially to an improvement in lagging, [and the means of securing the same to the coiling drum. To prevent excessive wearing of the line wound upon a bull or calf wheel drum,
' it is found desirable to place a cushion lagging upon the coiling drum. For this purpose the coiling drum has been covered Withlongitudinally extending lagging ropes or cables. Hitherto with such constructions it has been difficult to prevent fraying of the ends of the lagging ropes and to secure the same to the drum. It is an object of my invention to provide means for securing the ends of the lagging ropes to the drum, and at the same time cover them to prevent fray- I have illustrated an embodlment of my invention in the accompanying drawlng, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawing. I have shown my invention applied to a calf wheel in which a hollow cylindrical coiling drum or shaft, preferably of metal. is indicated by 5. Secured to the ends of this shaft are gudgeonsflandl" suitable for mounting the Shaft/in journal boxes. The gudgeon constructions are similar and are preferably separate members from the shaft 5. Gudgeon 6 has a cylindrical port on 8 mounted within the bore of the shaft 5, and is secured thereto by means of set screw 9. Any other suitable construction may be used as this part of the structure is not material to my invention.
Mounted upon the shaft 5 adjacent the gudgeon 6 is a drive wheel. 10 which is Specification of Letters Patent.

preferably of the usual construction, comprising a hub and tangential spokes bolted thereto. Aband 11 is shrunk upon the shaft 5 between the end thereof and the drive wheel 10. A clearance drum 12 iS mounted upon the shaft 5 adjacent the drive wheel 10, and is of a special construction later described. At the opposite end of the shaft 5 is a flange member 13. The space intermediate the flange nember13 and the clearance drum comprises the coiling drum indicated by 1 and upon which the lagging is mounted. i
The lagging is tubular in form covering the drum and is preferably comprised of ropes 15'arranged longitudinally and of a length slightly greater than the distance be.- tween the clearance drum 12 and the flange member 13. The ends of the ropes 15 are secured to each other by Weaving about them threads or strings 16 and 17. The intermediate portion of the lagging is wired by wires 18 and 19 which are threaded through each of the ropes and extend peripherally of the drum 14.
The clearance drum comprises a cylin: drical portion 20 upon which the inactive part of the line for the well rig is to be coiled. Formed upon the end of the cylindrical member 20 in a flange 21 which has formed therein a slot 22 for the crossover line. The clearance drum is formed in two sections divided radially along a diameter as indicated by 23. For the purpose of clamping the sections of the clearance drum upon the shaft 5 and of fixedly securing the same to the shaft, I have provided tangentially extending apertures for the purpose of receiving bolts 24. Recesses 25 are formed in line with the longitudinal axes of the apertures and upon the surface of the cylindrical porton 20 of the drum. Within these recesses are disposed the heads and nuts of the bolts. It is obvious that by this construction the clearance drum may be tightly clamped to the shaft 5. The bore of the clearance drum is counterbored as indicated by 26, and an inwardly extending tongue 27 is formed at the outer edge thereof. This tongue is for the purpose of en? gaging the ropes 15 adjacent the ends. The ends of the ropes lie within the COllIltQIf. bore 26.
The flange member 13 comprises a cylindrical portion 28 and a flange 29. The flange member is divided diametrically at m reac es 30 forming two parts. Means is provided for clamping the flange member to the shaft 5 and comprises radially extending lugs 31, pairs or which register with one another and are bored to receive bolts 32. A counter-bore 33 is formed in the flange member 13 and an inwardly extending tongue 3st for the purpose of gripping the ends oi the ropes.
In assembling the calf wheel the lagging is placed in position upon the shaft 5 and the clearance drum 12 mounted thereon within the tongue 27 gripping the ends of the rope. The flange member 13 is then mounted upon the opposite end gripping the other ends of the ropes. By tightening the bolts 2% and 32 on the clearance drum and flange members respectively, the lagging is firmly secured to the shaft and the ends protected from fraying.
"What I claim is:
1. in a wheel construction for well rigs, the combination of a coiling drum; a tubular lagging disposed thereon; divided flange members mounted thereon, one adjacent each end of said drum, said members having bores in which said drum is disposed, and means to grip the ends of said lagging between said drum and flange members.
2. In a wheel construction for well rigs, the combination of a coiling drum; a tubular lagging disposed thereon; divided flange members mounted thereon, one adjacent each end of said drum, said members having bores in which said drum is disposed, and inwardly extending tongues to grip the ends of said lagging between said drum and flange members.
8. in a wheel construction for well rigs, the combination of a ceiling drum; a lagging for said drum comprised of longitudinally extending ropes; and flange members mounted thereon, one adjacent each end of said drum, said members having bores in which said drum is disposed, and inwardly extending tongues to grip the ends of said lagging.

In a WllQcl construction for well rigs, the combination of a ceiling crum; a tubular lagging disposed thereon; a. segmental clearance drum mount d thereon, means for clamping the segments or said clearance drum to said coiling drum, said clearance drum having a bore in which said coiling drum is disposed, and a tongue extending inwardly from said bore to grip an end of said lagging; segmental flange mount ed upon the opposite end of said drum, means for clamping the segments of said flange to said coiling drum, said flange having a bore in which said drum is disposed, and an inwardly extending tongue to grip the other end of said lagging.

the combination of a coiling drum; a lagging covering said drum comprised of longitudinally extending ropes; a segmental clearance drum mounted thereon, means for clamping the segments of said clearance drum to said coiling drum, said clearance drum having a bore in which said coiling drum is disposed, and a tongue extending inwardly from said bore to grip theends of said ropes; a segmental flange mounted upon the opposite end of said coiling drum, means for clamping the segments or' said flange tosaid coiling drun said flange having a bore in which said drum is disposed, and an inwardly extending tongue to grip the other ends of said ropes.
