T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known I, HENRY H. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessie, in the county of VVashita and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Extracting V ehicles from Mudholes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for extracting vehicles from mud holes and more particularly to a device of this character which is operated by the vehicle to be removed.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of this character a novel and improved pulley attachment for engagement with the drive wheel of the vehicle to form a means of locomotion for the vehicle.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a pulley attachment which is capable of attachment to various types of wheels and more particularly to provide a device which may be employed either with spoked or disk wheels as desired.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which is simple in its construction and arrangement and which may be readily attached and in which the movement of the parts employed is reduced to a minimum.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose .of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automobile showing apparatus applied thereto constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing the arrangement of the apparatus;
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of attaching the device to a spoked wheel;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a disk wheel showing the arrangement of the securing element openings therein;
Figure 5 is a section similar to that shown in Figure 3, the device being applied to a disk wheel; and
Figure 6 is a detail view showing the hook employed at the end of the cable.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates an an- Serial No. 641,713.
nulus provided in its periphery with a groove 11. The annulus is provided interiorlyv with spaced segmental extensions, preferably three in number, each of the extensions having a portion thereof, indicated at 13, paralleling the plane of the annulus but offset therefrom, these offset portions 13 having formed therethrough slots 14 paralleling the chordal edge of the segmental sections and opposed approximately centrally thereof. In conjunction with a device of this character I provide securing elements 15, whichmay'be directed through the slots 14 and engaged with a portion of the wheel W to which the annulus is to be applied. Where the wheel is spoked, securing elements are in the form of bolts provided upon their ends with hooked portions 16 for engagementabout the spokes of the wheel, the hooked portions being of such size that they may be readily introduced through the; slots 14 for engagement with the spokes. Theopposite ends'of the bolts are threaded, as indicated at 17, and provided with lever nuts 18 so that they may be tightened to secure the annulus in position. Where the device is to be applied to disk wheels, the disk D of the wheels has rectangular openings 19 formed therein corresponding in number and arrangeemnt to the slots 14 of the extensions 12. With this type of wheel I employ a bolt 20 having a rectangular head 21 of the same size as the openings 19 of the disk D. The heads of these bolts are introduced through the slots 14 projected through the openings 19 of the disk D, when the bolts are rotated to place the extreme axis thereof transversely of the extreme axis of the openings 19 so that the ends of the head 21 will bear against the inner wall of the disk D to hold the annulus in position.
In conjunction with a device of this character I provide a cable or other flexible element 22 secured at one end to the drum and provided at its opposite end with a hook 23 for engagement with an axle A of the vehicle, intermediate its ends this cable passes above it. A pulley 24 is rotatably mounted in a yoke 25 having pivotally connected therewith a hooked ground engaging member 26. In the use of the device this hooked ground engaging member is engaged in the ground and the hook 23 is engaged with an axle of the vehicle, preferably a front axle thereof. The
power of the vehicle is then applied to the wheel IV, with the result that the cable is Wound in the groove of the annulus 10 and the vehicle moved forwardly to place the drive wheel W upon solid ground.
I am aware that heretofore devices disclosing the same general combination have been employed but all of these devices with which I am familiar embody a pulley attachment so complicated as to render the same very expensive to manufacture and difiicult to apply. A device constructed as hereinbefore described may be formed as a light integral casting which may be very cheaply produced and which is very readily applied to the wheel. It will be obvious that the construction of this device is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure as hereinbefore set forth except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In a device of the type described, a wheel pulley comprising an annulus having spaced segmental portions projecting inwardly therefrom, each segmental portion embodying a portion paralleling the plane of the annulus but offset inwardly therefrom, said offset portions having the faces thereof arranged in the same plane, slots formed in said offset portions and paralleling the chordal edge of the segmental portion of which it is a part, and securing naeasea elements extending through said slots for engagement with the wheel.
2. In a device of the type described, a wheel pulley comprising an annulus having spaced segmental portions projecting inwardly therefrom, each segmental portion embodying a portion paralleling the plane of the annulus but offset inwardly therefrom, said offset portions having the faces thereof arranged in the same plane, slots formed in said offset portions substantially centrally of and paralleling the chordal edge of the segmental portion of which it is a part, and securing elements extending through said slots for engagement with the wheel.
3. In combination with a disk wheel having a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings formed therein, the openings being equally spaced from the center of the wheel, a wheel pulley comprising an annulus having spaced inwardly directed segmental portions each embodying a portion offset from and paralleling the plane of the annulus, said offset portions corresponding in number and arrangement to the openings of the disk, each of said offset portions having a slot formed therein, and securing elements engageable in the openings of said disk through the slots of said offset portions, each having a head of greater length than the width of the slot of the disk.
