ASH-BOX FOR STOV'ES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,334, dated July 5, 1892.

Be it known that we, LAZARD KAHN and RINEHART CHRIST, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Boxes for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention pertains to improvements in that class of ash-boxes for stoves having formed integrally with them at the door-opening the jamb-surface against which the door seats; and our improvements will be readilyunderstood from the following description,

taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of an ash-box exemplifying our present improvements, the section being taken in the plane of line b of the other figures; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same with portions appearing in the plane of line 0 of the other figures; and Fig. 3, a plan part horizontal section of the same, the section being taken in the plane of line a of the other figures.

In the drawings, 1 indicates the rectangular ash -box formed with the base portion of the stove; 2, the floor of the ash-box; 3, the rear wall of the ash-box; 4, the side walls of the ash-box 5, the top of the ash-box, formed with a large opening to receive the grate of the stove, as usual; 6, the door-opening in the front of the ash-box; 7, the vertical portions of the door-jamb against which the door is to close; 8, recesses formed to the rear of these vertical jamb portions, the side walls of the ash-box at their forward portions where they approach the jamb portions 7 curving outwardly and joining th e outer edges of the j amb portions 7, whereby the ash-box is very much widened just within the jamb portions 7 9,

hinge-lugs projecting from the face of one or it might be both of the jamb portions 7, and 10 the skirting for the base of the stove,which skirting is, in the exemplification, shown as cast integrally with the ash-box.

It will be observed that the side walls of the ash-box are thin and that the door margins where the door seats present broad surfaces.

This would ordinarily involve either the inward or outward flanging of the side walls to produce these jamb-surfaces. If the walls were flanged outwardly to produce these surfaces, the thin exterior edges of the flanges would be unsupported and much liable to become broken by the ordinary knocking liable to occur at the base of the stove. If the jambs were flanged directly inward from the side walls, they would form a serious contraction in width at the front of the ash-box. By the present construction the ash-box is not contracted at the front and there are no unbraced edges at the exterior of the jamb and the appearance at these points is finished and pleasing.- Furthermore, in the process of molding such structures considerable difficulty has been found by reason of the presence of the hinge-lugs 9, projecting from the front of the door-jamb, it being necessary to draw these lugs inward from the mold. In the present construction, after the core for the interior of the ash-box has been lifted the lugs 9 may be drawn inwardly through the front of the pattern, the recesses 8 to the rear of them permitting this withdrawal into the space made vacant by the removal of the boxcore. We claim as our invention- 1. An ash-box for a stove having jamb portions formed integrally with the side walls of the box and having recesses to the rear of the jamb portions formed by sidewise deflection of the Walls to join the outer edges of the jamb portions.

2. An ash-box for a stove having a dooropening corresponding substantially in width with the distance between the side walls of the box, the front portions of the side walls being extended outwardly to join with the outer edges of the j amb portions of the dooropening.
