SAFE CONSTRUCTION.
Specificatio:
.ters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1915 the following is a specification.
This invention pertaining to improvements in safe-construction will be readily understood; from the following descriptiontaken in connection with the accompany ng drawings in which 1 Figure 1 is a front elevation of a safebody exemplifying our invention: Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the same: Fig. 3 a rear elevation of the body with'the back-plate absent: Fig. 4: a front elevation of the back-c plate: Fig. 5 a horizontal section in the plane of line a of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4: Fig. 6 a horizontal section, at one rear corner of the safe, in the plane of line a of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and i illustrating the structure in incomplete form: Fig. '4' a similar view illustrating the structure in complete form and Fig. 8 a horizontal section in the plane of line a of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and i of the safe-bodv with the door shown in plan. a
A diversity of scales is employed in the drawings. 7
In the drawings 2-1, indicates the body of the safe, whose exterior form is immaterial, one feature of our invention requiring'the safe-body or one of its walls to he formed of material possessing a certain degree of malleability: 2, the door opening therein, illustrated as being of circular form and provided with interiorly projecting locking lugs: 3, a circular opening extending through one of the walls of the safe-body, this opening being shown in the illustration as being in the rear wall of the body: a, a circular plate separably inserted in the opening 3 and having its perimeter tapering with an outward convergence: 5, lugs carried by the safe-body and projecting inwardly past the margin of opening 3.: 6, hooks carried by plate 4 and adapted, as the plate is being put in place in the opening-in the body, to pass between the body-lugs and then, by retation of the plate, to pass in behind the lugsr' i, inner safe disposed within the dicated in Fig. 6.
outer one and ofa size adapting it to pass through the rear opening when the plate therein is ahsent: 8', the door-opening in the the inner safe, the same being in alinenient with the door-opening in e-hody 1, this door-opening of the inner being illustrated as being 'interiorly ded: 9,. an accurately fitted rabhetcd joint between the front of the inner safe and the rear portion of the margin of door-0pening 2: 10, the space surrounding the inner safe between it and the outer safe-body: 11, a-lilling oi. plastic material, as cement, occupying this space; and 12 a door closing the door-0penings in both the inner and outer safes.
Considering only theouter safe-member, it or "that wall of which contains the circular opening 3 is ,to be of malleable material. Our best contemplation at present is that the sarebody 1 and its plate a be formed of manganese steel castings, this metal be: ing-uncutahle hut n'ialleaole to a. satisfactory extent. in constructing the outer safeineniher the margin of the circular opening 3 will he cylindrical, while the margin of plate will be frusto-conical, both as in- The plate may thus befreely enteredfinto the opeing in the safe wall, and, after this has been done, the margin of the opening may be swage'd inwardlyto tightly engage and. overhang the margin of the plate, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 7. The plate is thus securely locked in. place and cannot be released by any cutting operation. l fe have illustrated the opening at the plate as being in the rear wall of the safe, and this will he the most desirable location under most all conditions. The forming of the safe-body with the large opening for the inserted plate provides special curately fitted together at their joint 9, the
cuter safe-body is set front downward and ing is still plastic, the plate is inserted'and adjusted angularly till its hooks engage under thelugs of the safe-body. Then, re-
. gardless of the swaging of the safe-body to the plate, the filling, when it hardens, will prevent such angular movement of .the plate in its opening as to release it from the safebody, a double protection being thus afforded.
Our best present contemplation is that the inner safe shall be formed of a manganese steel casting, and when the described structure has been produced there results an inner and outer safe-member with fireproof filling between them.
It is to be understood that, regardless of what may be the exterior form of either the inner or outer safe-member, the opening in the wall of the outer safe-member must be of sufficient size to permit the insertion through it of the inner safe-member. While the invention obviously lends itself to a variety of door-constructions, we give our preference to a circular door-opening common to both safe-members the front portion of the door-jamb being formed in the outer safemember and the rear portion of the doorjamb being formed in the inner safe-memher. We have seenfit to illustrate our invention in connection with a door-jamb provided with locking-lugs in its front portion and a screw in its rear portion, such a dooropening being adapted for the peculiar compound door of our United States Patent No.
v 1,118,436 of November 24th 1914.
We claim I 1. Safe-construction comprising, a wall having an opening therethrough and formed of malleable material at the margin of the opening, a support projecting inwardly of said margin at the inner surface of said wall, a. plate fitting said opening and having its perimeter tapering with an outward convergence, the margin of the opening being swaged inwardly into'contact with the perimeter of the plate after the plate has been inserted in the opening, combined substantially as set forth. ,7
2. Safe-construction comprising, a wall having through it a circular opening, a circomferential series of lugs projecting inwardly of the opening, a plate filling the opening and resting on said lugs, a circum-' ferential series of hooks on the back of the plateand adapted to pass between said lugs and then to engage behind the lugs of the angular adjustment of the plate, plastic filling applied at the inner surface of the wall and plate engaging the hooks and lugs, and means inwardly of said plate and filling to, prevent the displacement of said filling, combined substantially asset forth.
3. Safe-construction comprising, a wall cumferential series of lugs projecting 1nwardly of theopening, aplate filling the opening, a'circumfere'ntial series of books on the back of the plate and adapted to pass between said lugs and then toengage behind the lugs by the angular adjustment of the plate, plastic filling applied at the-inner surface of the wall and plate and engaging the hooks and-lugs, and means inwardly of said plate and filling-to prevent displacement of the filling, the periphery of the plate contracting outwardly and the margin of the opening being swaged into contact with said periphery combined substantially as set forth. I
4. Safe-construction comprising, an outer safe-member provided with a door-opening and with anopening in one of its other walls, an inner safe-member disposed within the outer safe-member and supported therein free therefrom at its back and around itsexterior and adapted to pass through the last-mentioned opening, means' for supporting the inner safe-member with: in'the outer one, a plate secured in said last-mentioned opening, and a filling of plastic material disposed in the spacebetween the outer and inner safe-members,
said filling serving to position said inner safe-member relative to said plate, combined substantiallyas set forth. I v
5. Safe-construction comprising, an, outer safe-member provided with a door-jamb and with a supplemental opening in one of its walls larger than said door-jamb, an inner safe-member provided with a door-jamb in axial alinement with the door-jamb of the outer. safe-memben'a joint being formed between the front of the inner safe-member around its door-jamb and the rear portion of the door-jamb of the outer safe-member,
a plate applicable from the outside of the outer safe-member and permanentl closing said supplementalopening, means or maintaining the inner safe-member in such relation to the outer safe-member that the two door-jambs will be in direct contact,
and a door hinged to the outer safe-memberand adapted to move-into and close both door-jambs, combined substantially as seti forth.
p 6. Safe-construction comprising, an outer safe-member provided with a door-jamb d' tic material disposed in thespace between door-jz rmb's, combined substantially as set the inner antl'outer safermembers and servforth.
ing to position the two safe-members in such MOSES MGQLEE. relation to each other that portions of the CARL BARTELS. two door-jambs will be in direct contact, Witnesses:
and a door hinged to the outer safe-member CHAS. J. GRAEsER,
and adapted to move into and close bpth HENRY G. MOsLEn.
