I OGDEN, UTAH TERRITORY.`
COMMERCIALl COIN.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,304, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed April 7. 1891.' Serial No. 387,916.V (No specimens.) I
To all .whom t may concern):
Be it known that I, IRvIN THADEUs AL- VORD, a`citizen of the United States, resid-v ing at North Ogden, in the county of Weber and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commercial Coins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven-f tion, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V
This invention has relation to an improvevmenten commercial coins or merchandisechecks; and it has for its'object'to provide a check with a protect'ngsu1face which may be easily kept clean, handling, and will not be liable to become Worn or impaired in any manner by long use.
Heretofore it has beenf proposed in credit systems to provide cards'or the like bearing certain incriptions, such as the name of the yparty issuing the card, the party to Whom the card has been issued, and the value which may be obtained upon the presentation of the card. Such cards have `been found objectionable, first, by the party issuing them, for the reason that the printed or written matter may be easily changed er altered, and, second, by the party receiving them, for the reason that the cards becomel soiled and readily tear or break, so that in some cases the essential part becomes lost.
My improvement will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a face view. of my improved commercial coin. Fig. 2 is aback view of the sanie, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the inscription-disk'and the transparent protecting disks or coating onboth sides thereof.
Referring by letter to ythe said drawings, A indicates the inscription-disk of my improvedl commercial coin, which may be formed of any suitable material and in any desired form, although I prefer to make the same of paper and'of a circular form about the size ofa silver` dcllaa'as illustrated. l Upon both sides of' the ldiskA, I design inscribing such mat `Which will not soil byl ter as the name of the merchant issuing the coin, the character of merchandise for which it is a tender, and the denomination or amount of value it represents; and I prefer to color said disk according to the amount of value represented, whereby both the merchant and customer may perceive its value at a glance.
B indicates the transparentprotecting disk or covering of my improved device, which is preferably composed of transparent Celluloid and is of a form corresponding to the in-I scribed disk A, to which itis preferably attached by means of a transparentl cement or the like. These transparent disks are secured on opposite sides of the inscribedrdisk by placing them hat together, so as to present no raised parts, which are so liable to become broken or injured. y
A preferred embodiment of my invention is to inscribe the disk A with suitable matter upon both of its sides, in which case 'a transparent disk or covering Would'be attached to eachside of said disk; but itis obviousthat 'if the disk Ais only inscribed upon one side only one transparent disk or covering would be employed.
Although I have described paper as the pre` I ferred material for the inscription-disk of my improved coin, there are other materialssuch as wood, leather', metal, vulcanized rubber, celluloid, and ivory-which are equally desirable for the purpose.
Vhen la material not adapted to be printed is employed for the inscription-disk, the in?" scribed matter may be placed upon the face thereof through the medium of aqua-fortis, muriatic acid, ynitric acid, or other suitable agents.
Instead of covering the inscribed side or sides of the inscription-disk with transparent Celluloid, as has been described, other protecting-coatings-such as glass and-isinglass-might be employed.
' By the provision of my improved commer-v cial coin it will be seen that the business transaction of retail dealers may 'begreatly 'simplified and the objectionable pass-bock j and other similarcredit systems dispensed Having described my invention, whah claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved commercial coin or merchandise-check described, comprising a sheet or disk bearing the name of the party issuing said coin, together with its denomination or matter of similar import, and transparent disks protecting said inscribed disk and se- 1o cured thereto by transparent adhesive snbstance, tne respective disks bein-g brought flush upon each other, so as to prevent breakage.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRVIN THADEUS ALVORD.
