PRINTERS RULE-BEN DER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 478,085, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed November 6, 1891. Serial No. 411,096. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH BUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful tool which I call a Printers Rule-Bender, of which the following is a specification.
My rule-bender is calculated for the use of compositors and printers in bending rules in many desired forms to be used in ornamental printing.
My invention consists of a blade of steel having one or more notches near one end and carrying two or more cylinders of unequal diameter upon the other. These cylinders are so placed upon the blade that their faces are even with one edge of it. A narrow groove by the side of the blade is cut the entire length of the cylinders.
In the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my rule-bender. Fig.2 is an end View showing the relative positions of the cylinders, the grooves, and the blade. Figs. 3 and 7 show the rule as being operated upon. forms and combinations effected and which may be multiplied indefinitely.

To bend a rule to print av scroll or a circle, such as are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, insert the end of the rule in the groove b and wind it around the cylinder. The groove retains the end of the rule while bending, but does not prevent removing it in its bent form. The face of the cylinder along the groove is cut away, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that in bending the rule around the cylinder it will have a more gradual increase in its diameter.
The notch a in the blade A is for the purpose of making short bends in the edge of a rule, and one or more rules may be operated upon at one time. Fig. 7 illustrates this operation, and Fig. 6 ata: illustrates the printed results.
