CESSPOOLi-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 477,977, datedJune 28, 1892.
Application filed February 17, 1892- Serial No. 421,858. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT WELLING, of Oovington, Kenton county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cesspool-Valves or Catch-Basin Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in valves for cesspool or catch-basins for waterclosets and in the general arrangement of they parts forming the construction of such cesspool or catch-basins.
The objects of my improvement are, first, to provide an adjustable basket or interstitial valve to a cesspool or catch-basin that in case of any paperor other-such obstructions clogging the free passage of the water through the said basket-valve the said valve or parts Thereof can be raised and -twirled or given a horizontal revolving motion to free it of such obstructions; second, in affording facilities for the adjustment of the grating of the vertical overflow-pipe; third, in fixing the vertical overflow-pipe outside of the cesspool or catch-basin, thereby improving the construction, avoiding filth, and increasing the facilities and economy in repairs. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a section of the lower parts of the cesspool or catch-basin; Fig. 2, an elevation of the valve; Fig. 3, a sectionof the valve; Fig. 4c, a top View of the bottom part of the valve; Fig. 5, a front View of the grating for the overflow.

A is the valve proper. It will have a hole in its center with a square recess on top. The pin D will fit in the same and pass through it and will secure the gasket F to its lower part by the aid of the nut E. The whole will fit close in the socket G of the sewer-pipe.

O is the outside and lower ring of the basket-valve. It will befixed a little above the bottom of the cesspool. The rods H are fitted to it and the top plate 13.. They will form the interstitialorbasket part of the'valve. Three or four of those rods will be fastened, as shown at h. The rod J will be fastened in bolt I) below and will pass through the gas-pipe K, through the seat-board above, and have a proper handle. The gas-pipe K will be rigidly fixed and fastened to the seat-board of the water-closet and below by a swivel u u, so that the crown or top plate B can turn easily around it when twirled. The said gaspipe will form a rigid guide for the rod J in adjusting and twirling the valve. L is a horizontal iron overflow-pipe. The part resting on the brick-work is made square in section and cylindrical where it fits in the T-piece of the vertical outside overflow-pipe N. The square will be fitted up witha removable grating S, having two small lugs ca 00, one on each side, and having a hole W on top, so that it can be taken out and replaced when needed by means of a hook in the hands of an operator and used from above without going into the cesspool. M is the sewer, P a plunger, and R a trap. T represents a section of the basket-valve in position. The top of the outside overflow vertical pipe will come up within a few inches of the surfaceandwill be covered by a grating and be easy of access when it is desired to clean the trap by means of the plunger.
What I claim is In a cesspool or catch-basin, the combination of the following elements: the valve-plate A, having the lugs a a, the square-headed pin D, gasket F, secured by.the-nutE to fit close in socket G, the rod J, fastened to pin D and passing through the gas-pipe K,'that is fastened above to the seat and by a swivel to the under part of plate B, so that when said rod J is raised the lugs a a will mesh in lugs 19 b of the plate B, hence the rods'I-I, fixed in ring 0 and plate B, can be rotated horizontally to free it of obstructions, substantially as shown and described.
