Description
STATES PATENT FFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,026, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLLINS KNowLns, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of ll'lassachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Vash-Bowls or Sinks; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of a wash-bowl, its discharging-conduit, valves, and valve-operating mechanism, as applied together, and a shelf' or slab, and provided with my invention. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken through the forked lever, to be hereinafter described.
The object of my invention is to enable a person at pleasure to either close or open the vent of the bowl.
In the drawing, the said bowl is shown at A as applied to a marble slab, B, in the usual manner, the mouth of the bowl opening through the slab. At the lower end of the educt or vent-pipe c of the bowl is a strainer, b. A tubular valvecase, C, is screwed on the vent-pipe a, there being within and across such case a partition, d, through which, conccntrically' with the case, is a circular hole, e. The top of the said partition is a seat for the upper or disk-valve D, fixed on the upper end of a stem or rod, f. From the opening e an ajutage or short pipe, g, extends downward into the case and below the partition, and into and lits to the bore of a short tube, E, arranged to fit to and slide vertically within the bore of the case C, or that part of it which is below the partition. The tube E is a cylindrical valve, open at each end, its seat being the lower side of the partition. The said tube E also covers two slots, h, made in opposite sides of the valve-case to receive the screws t', by which the prongs k of a forked lever, F, are pivoted to the tubular valve E. Two bars, lfm, extend diametrically across the tubular valve E, and serve to support the stem of the disk-valve, which goes down through them, has a shoulder, n, to rest on the upper of them, and is held in place by a nut, 0, screwed upon its lower part and against the lower bar. The forked lever F, arranged as shown, has its fulcrum p in an arm, q, extended down from the slab, and is pivoted to a sleeve,
G, placed concentrically upon the lower part of a vertical shaft, H, arranged in a bearing, I, fixed to the slab. end is provided with a milled head, r, which projects both above and below the slab. A screw or stud, s, is extended from the shaft or spindle H into an inclined slot, t, formed in the sleeve, as shown.
By revolving the shaft in one direction the sleeve will be raised, and it will be moved downward when the shaft is turned the opposite way, such movements serving to effect, through the forked lever, vertical movements of the diskvalve and the tubular valve. Vhen the tubular valve is up to its seat the disk-valve will be off its seat to enable water to escape from the bowl, provided there may be any therein. The tubular valve will prevent the discharged water from escaping laterally through the openings or slots of the valve-case, the ajutage aiding in directing such water away from the upper end of the tubular valve and the seat thereof.
A coupling, K, for a waste-pipe is screwed on the lower end of the valve-case.
One object I have had in view in making my invention has been to got rid of the plug and its lifting-chain, as generally employed in stationary basins, wash-bowls, or sinks, such plug being for estopping the vent of the bowl or sink.
I claiml. The combination and arrangement of the disk and tubular valves D E with the slotted valve-case C and its perforated partition d, the valves being connected as described.
2. I n combination therewith, the forked lever F, the oblique-slotted sleeve G, and the spindle or sha-ft H, all constructed and applied together in manner and so as to operate substantially as explained.
3. The combination of the valve apparatus,A
substantially as described, with a wash-bowl or vessel and the vent thereof, as set forth.
4. The arrangement and combination of the ajutage g with the disk and. tubular valves and the slotted valve-case and its partition, all combined and arranged in manner as specified.
