MI I! a 1mm; .zzzwm'.
Z I Mg A TTOHNEYS UNITE STATES PATEivT OFFIC EDWARD B. LOOMIS, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEEQ DUST AND CINDERPROTECTOR FOR CAR-WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,948, dated June 28, 1892. Application filed March 21, 1892' Serial No. 425,863. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. LOOMIS,re-V
siding at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- Guards for Oar-Windows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved detachable dust-guard for car-windows, the object of the invention being to provide a simple device of this character which is so constructed that it can be conveniently carried in the pocket or valise of each passenger, and one that can be quickly and easily set up in operative position by the passenger when so desired.
\Vith these objects in view it consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts and their novel combination or arrangement, all of which will be fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device in use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 shows details of construction. .Fig. 4 is aperspectiveview of the device complete and ready for use, and Fig. 5 shows the manner of folding the different parts.
In carrying out my invention I employ a stick A, which is adapted to support the guard or deflector plate or wing B, which is connected with the stick A in a manner hereinafter described. The stick A is made in sections (1., preferably two in number, united by a hinge a, and the outer ends of sections are notched at a to receive the sill and lower rail of window when the guard is properly arranged. The outer ends are also provided with prongs at, which are adapted to be forced into the sill and rail of window and prevent the guard being turned by the action of the wind. One of the sections is provided with a hook of, which engages a pin a and holds the sections rigid in an extended position. A series of buttons 0 is attached to one face of the stick, said buttons being arranged in pairs a definite distance apart, and it will be observed that the joint between the sections occurs between the central pair of buttons.
The guard or deflector plate or wing B is constructed of a series of transverse sections 1) hinged at b, 'and'each section has a pair of keyhole-shaped apertures 11 produced near one edge ofthe sections, and these apertures are arranged in relation to the buttons upon the stick, which they receive when the deflector-wingis secured to the stick. The apertures 12 are strengthened by means of eyelets 12 The corners of the outer sections are cut away to correspond with the ends of the stick.
The stick is adapted to fold like an ordinary measuring-rule, and the deflector-wing like abook, and the two can be conveniently carried in the pocket or valise of the passenger.
In order to place the guard in operative position, the stick is unfolded and locked in its extended position. The deflector-wing is then unfolded, the buttons on the stick passed.
. through the apertures, and the shanks of buttons forced into the narrow portions of the apertures. The guard is now ready for attachment to the car and is arranged between the lower rail of 7 window andsill of frame, the prongs entering the said parts and prevent any turning. The wing is thus secured in place and projects outward a sufficient distance to deflect any dust or cinders and prevent them entering the car-window. The central section engaging buttons upon opposite sides of the joint braces and. strengthens said joint, and the wing folding in a direction at right angles to that in whichthe stick folds will tend to hold both parts in extended positions. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j 1. The combinatiom'with a sectional folding stick having buttons arranged upon each section, of a sectional folding deflector plate or wing having a series of apertures adapted to receive the buttons, one of the sections being adapted to receive buttonsupon opposite sides of the joint, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a sectional folding stick, of a sectional folding wing or plate, the wing folding at right angles to the direction the stick folds, whereby the stick and in each section and the eyelets for protecting wing tend to hold each other in position, subthe apertures, substantially as shown and de- IO stantially as shown and described. scribed.
3. The combination, with a sectional fold- 5 ing stick having prongs at its ends, buttons EDWARD LOOMIS' upon its face, and the hook and pin at its Witnesses: joint, of the sectional folding deflector-Wing L. W. DUTRO, having a series of keyhole-shaped apertures J. P. ALBAN.
