JAMES PETER KIMBLE, OF ROSE HILL, IOWA.
TRACK-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,943, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed March 3, 1892. Serial No. 423,633. (No model.)
marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps for railway-rails.
The object of the invention is to provide means for connecting the rails to each other to prevent them spreading; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view showing the device applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly in section, showing the parts which make up the clamp detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a rail-joint having a fish-plate.
A designates a rod, the ends of which are threaded either in. the same or reverse direction, as may be preferred, and these screwthreaded portions a ct may be of a greater diameter than the rest of the rod or of the same or less diameter, a larger diameter being preferred for the reason that the parts of the upon the center portion of the rod when desired.
B and B designate adjustable clamp-nuts, which have central apertures h and b', a portion of each of which is enlarged, as shown, the reduced portion of each aperture being screw-threaded to receive the threaded ends of the rod A. Each clamp-nut has an annular shoulder c, which is adapted to engage with one of the clamping-heads which embrace the base-liange of the rail. The eX- tended portion of the clamp-nut Bis externally screw-threaded, as shown at d, for engagement with the threads d', formed in the enlarged portion ot' the aperture in the clam pnut B.
D and D designate the clamping-heads, which have jaws c and e', which are adapted to engage with the base-ange of the rail. The clamp D has an aperture f, which is adapted to tit over the unthreaded portion ot' the clamp-nut B adjacent to the shoulder c, and beyond this aperture f is a recess or aperture g of larger diameter, into which may pass the inner end of theclamp-nutB. y The clamp D is provided with a straight-away aperture f', into which passes the inner end of the clamp-nut B', and, if desired, the under side of the clamp may be cut away, so that it can be readily placed over the rod A, as it may be necessary to remove said clamp and replace it with one having a jaw of a different size for engagement with a sh-plate, as shown in Fig. 3.
' The device hereinbefore described is adapted to be applied to the rails between the ties,
and it will be observed that the fixtures at end of the rod A are independently adjustable, so that the rails may be adjusted to the proper gage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a clamp for railwayrails, of a rod having threaded ends, clampnuts threaded for engagement therewith and with each other, and clamping-heads apertured for the passage of the clam p-nuts, said heads having jaws, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a clamp for railwayrails, of a rod A, an adjustable clamp-nut adapted to engage with the threaded portion of the rod, and a head having j aws,'and a portion which encircles the clamp-nut, said encircling portion being cut away to provide for placing the same upon-the rod, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a rod A, having threaded ends, of clamp-nutsB and B', threaded for engagement with each other and provided with shoulders c c, and clamps D and D', apertured for the passage of the clamp-nuts, the shoulders c c of the clamp-nuts bearing IOO against the outer edges of the clamps, substantiailyras shown, and for the purpose sety forth.
4. In a rail-clamp, the combination of a rod 5 having a threaded end, an adjustable clampnut threaded for engagement therewith and provided With a shoulder c andan inwardlyextending portion, a clamp carrying jaws and provided with an aperture through-Which the 3 [c inwardly-projecting portion of the Clamp-nut passes, the shoulderc thereof bearing against the exterior portion of the clamp adjacent to said aperture, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
