CARPET-STRETCHING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,809, dated June 28, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN T. LEMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oarpet Stretching Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to 'carpet-stretchers of that class adapted to be used in connection with a carpet-fastening device wherein the edges of the carpet are engaged with hooks projecting from a floor-cleat.

The objects of my invention are toprovide a. simple and inexpensive form of carpetstretching device for use in connection with the above-mentioned class of carpet-attaching devices and to so construct and arrange said stretching device as to admit of the carpet beingtigh tlystretched thereby and hooked over the cleat catch-hook in a rapid and effectivemanner. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a flooring, showing asection of carpet connected with the attaching-hooks and showing my improved stretching device in position for use; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of my improved stretcher.

The outer end or handle portion of the arm 0' of the lever is then sufficiently elevated to cause an engagement of the teeth at with the carpet e. The portion of the carpet thus engaged is by turning the stretching-lever toward the next unused hook I) forced to such position as to admit of the lever and the carpet which is engaged thereby being sufficiently raised to press the carpet down over the new hook. The lever being pivoted or fulcrumed upon one of the hooks and being turned thereon as described, it is obvious that the arc traversed by said lever will result in stretching the carpet both in the direction of the cleat and toward the latter". The teeth (1 are so arranged that when the lever is driven to a position adjoining the hook to be engaged said hook will find a bearingbetween the teeth. It is obvious that the stretching-arm might be of such length as to be made to engage with other hooks of the series than that next the new hook tobe engaged and that said stretching-lever might be provided with more than one pivot-arm to admit of a pivotal engagement with more than one of said hooks at a time.

It will be observed that the construction of my device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive and its operation will be simple and effective.

Owing to the form of my device it will be observed that when desired the stretchinglever may be so turned as to admit of a pressure either to the right or left.
