CROCHET-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,806, dated June 28, 1 892.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KnssLnR', a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crochet-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to an improved crochet-button and the method of manufacturing the same, whereby the expensive hand-work heretofore required for making crochet-buttons is dispensed with and the covering ofthe buttons accomplished on a braiding-machine in a rapid and economical manner; and the invention consists, first, of a crochet-button composed of an interior shell having a central aperture, a braided covering for said shell, a covered center-piece placed. against the central aperture of the shell, and a bottom plate that is sprung into the shell,so as to retain the covering of the same.
The invention consists, secondly, of the method of making crochetbuttons, which consists in covering a number of shells by means of abraided tube, then severing the tube at the points intermediately between the shells, inserting the center-piece into the shell, and closing the covered button by meansof a bottom plate, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a braided tube with the shells of a number of buttons inserted therein while brading the tube. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views, respectively, of the shells and bottom plates of the button. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of my improved crochet-button, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of thesame.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the shell of my improved crochet-button, which shell is preferably stamped out of sheet metal by means of suitable dies and provided with a central aperture a. A braided covering A is placed over said shell, its upper edge being inserted into the central aperture a, which is then closed by a center-piece B, that is also covered by a braided covering b, so that the same forms an ornamental center-piece or core for the button. The covering A of the shellA is bent over the lower edge of the shell A and retained in position by a sheet-metal bottom plate C, which is sprung into the shell and pressed in position thereon, so as to retain the covering firmly on the shell. Before putting in the bottom plate C the interior of the button is filled with suitable layers D of pasteboard that are cut to proper shape and which retain theceuter-piece Bin position in v the button so that it cannot shift or got out of place. The shell is made either plain or corrugated, so that different designsare obtained. The bottom plate or eye-plate O is provided with an eye or perforated shank (Z, that serves for sewing the but-ton to the garment.
In manufacturing the button a braided tube of a size corresponding to the diameter of the shells is made on a braiding-machine, the shells being ,inserted as the braiding of the tube proceeds, so that a tube with a series of covered shells is obtained, which tube is widest at the points of greatest diameter of the shells, while the intermediate portions between the shells are contracted, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The tube with the series or string of covered shells may be made in any desired length, it being used for making the buttons by cutting off the tube at pointsintermediately between the shells. The upper: edge of the braided covering thus formed on the shell is then folded or inserted into the central aperturea of the shell, while the lower end of the covering is placed around the lower edge of the shell. The center-piece B, with its covering 1), is then inserted into the shell A and backed up by the pasteboard layers or disks, after whichthe bottom plate is sprung into the shell, whereby the filling disks and center-piece are firmly retained in position, forming a neatly-finished button.
The button can be made with any suitablycolored covering and forms a new style of. crochet-button, which can be completed entirely by machinery, so as to dispense. with the expensive hand-labor heretofore required in making crochet-buttons.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cr0chet-button composed of an inverted-cup-shaped shell having an aperture in'the bottom of the cup, a braided covering applied 7 to said shell and turned in over'the edges thereof, a covered center-piece closing said aperture, a filling, and an eye-plate sprung intothe open back of the shell and pressing the filling against the center-piece, substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of making crochet-buttons, which consists in braiding a tubular Web over a series of centrally-apertured bulbous shells, cutting off the web at points between said shells, folding the edges of the covering over the edge of the central aperture and the outer edge of the shell, in-
