To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that LHEEMANN OTTO KUNATH, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rope-Reels, of

which the following is a full, clear, and exact.

description.

This invention is more especially designed to be used as a reel for clothes or wash lilies; and it consists in a novel reel applicable to such purpose, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu all the figures.

Figure l represents a face view of a Washline reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side or edge View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof upon the line ma' in Fig. l.

The rope or line reel represented in the accompanying drawings is flat in form, and in this respect resembles a board for reeling the line upon. It is of an oblong shape, provided with a handle on one side and extensions at its corners to accommodate and hold the line as it is reeled upon it. Thus A A indicate two diagonally-cross`ing sticks of equal length, cut off square at their ends and notched at their middle to iit one within the other Where they cross each other and so that they present flush surfaces on each' side of the reel. Thus fitted together these sticks or pieces A A are secured together at their middle, where notched one into the other, by a steel-wire rivet o.

B is a side stick of lesser length than the sticks A A, but of like thickness as them, and C C are similar sticks of still less length. These sticks B and C C are beveled off at their ends to fit the sides of the diagonal pieces or sticks A A, against which they lie and to which they are secured, as by steel- Wire nails o c, and thus secured they occupy a position in relation with each other to form the one side and two ends of a rectangular oblong figure, a handle-piece D, of corresponding length or thereabout to the side piece or stick B, being inserted Within holes in the diagonal pieces or sticks A A on the opposite side of the same to the side piece B and completing the oblong figure of the reel, with extensions d CZ, formed by the protruding ends of the diagonal pieces A A at its corners to accommodate and hold the line as it is reeled upon the same.

I do not limit myself to any'precise size for this linereel; but in practice I have found that suitable dimensions for it are to make the diagonal pieces or sticks A A about eighteen inches in length, the side piece B twelve inches long, the handle-piece D alittle longer to fit the holes in the diagonal sticks, and the end sticks@ Oabout seven inches in length. Instead of the parts being secured together by rivet and nails, screws might be used or they might be mortised and tenoned together.

`A clothes-line reel thus constructed may be made cheap from waste pieces of Wood 0r strips for which no furniture or Wood-working manufactory has ordinarily any use. It will be a strong form of construction and not liable to be broken, either by hard or common use. It will not split like one made of a single solid piece of wood and will not be liable to bend or warp by changes in the weathersuch as from rainto sunshine, or vice versaand will not allow of the wash or clothes line slipping oft it.

Gane or rattan, or even metal of different kinds, may be substituted for Wooden sticks of square form in transverse section, if desired, and such other changes made as come Within the limits of the invention.

The herein-described reel, consisting of the inclined pieces A A, secured together at their centers, the side piece B, the end pieces C C, and the handle D, the said side piece., end pieces, and handle being secured to the inclined pieces a short distance from their ends, as set forth.
