ClGAR-TlP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,660, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed November 14, 1891. Serial No. 411,924. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Il. LILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullrnprovement in Cigar-Tip Cutters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following` specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a cigar-cutter formed of a box or casing having an oscillating cap thereon and knives within the casing at opposite ends thereof, said cap having openings to receive the tips of cigars and operating to move the tips against cutting-edges of the knives to sever the same, said knives also serving as restoring-springs for the cap.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a cigar-cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a box or casing, from the base of which rise the knives B.
C designates a cap, which closes the box A and is centrally pivoted thereon in the vertical plane of the secured ends of the knives B, whereby oscillating motions may be imparted to said cap, it being noticed that the ends of the box and cap ,are segmental, as at D, so that as the cap is operated its ends move concentric over the ends of the boX, the sides of the cap being also iianged, so as to freely envelop the sides of the box, by which provisions the top of the box is fully closed whether the cap is in operation or at rest. ln the upper wall of the cap, at opposite ends thereof, are openings E to receive the tips of cigars, it being noticed that the cutting-edges of the knives are contiguous to the under side of the upper wall of the cap adjacent to the openings E and face outwardly.
The operation is as follows: The tip of a cigar is placed in the proper opening and the end of the cap depressed, whereby the cutting-edge of the knife advances and rides along the under side of the upper wall of the cap toward the end of the cap,itbeing noticed that the knife is sufficiently elastic in its nature to yield to the pressure of the cap. As the tip of the cigar is within the cap in the path of the edge of the advancing knife it is sheared or cut off and the tip drops into the box. IVhen the cap is let go, the knife acts as a spring and restores said cap toits normal position. It will also be seen that either end of the cap may be depressed, and as the tipopenings and a knife are provided at each end of the device a duplex cutter is presented, either end of which may render service by properly depressing the same.
In order to secure the knives to the box, the saine are made diverging from the base ot' the device, and a screw F is passed through the angle of the knives into the bed G of the base H of the device, the lower portion of the box being screwed to said base, the latter being also provided with openingsJ for the discharge of the cuttings. The bed G is V- shaped, so as to receive the angle of the knives and adjacent portion of the same, thus iirnnly sustaining the knives.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V A cigar-cutter consisting of a box having segmental ends, a base provided with a V- shaped recess, diverging knives secured to said base, and a cap pivotally secured to said box in the vertical plane of the angle of the knives, having tip-openings and segmental ends, the cutting-edges of said knives being in contact with said cap adjacent to the tipopenings therein and the angle of the knives being seated in the recess in the base and the parts named combined substantially as described.
