VFILEY MONROE JONES, OF W'EBB CITY, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELIJAH W. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
PEGGlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,650, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed November 11, 1891. Serial No. 411,597. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILEY MONROE JONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vebb City, in the county of Franklin and State of Arkansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Sl1oeJacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shoe-jacks for holding a last while a boot or shoe is in process of manufacture or while repairs are being made.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device or apparatus for the above purpose which shall possess superior advantages with respect to simplicity of construction, durability in use, and efficiency in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe-jack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-n umeral 1 designates alongitudinal bar, and 2 2 transverse bars near each end thereof, constituting the base of the device. Secured to one of these 5 5 transverse bars is a fixed upright or standard 3, constituting the support for the heel of the last, being provided with an upwardly'project-ing pin 3, which engages with the last. At or near its center it is provided with a piv- 40 oted forwardly-projecting bar or arm 4, having the upper side of its free end beveled or curved, while its under side is provided with a series of rack-teeth 5. This bar or arm passes through a slot or aperture 6 in the toesupporting adjustable upright or standard 7, which is pivoted to the bar 1 at its lower end.
Located in the slot or aperture 6 is a transverse plate 8, adapted to engage with the rack-teeth 5, so as to retain the said upright in any position to which it may be adjusted, a plate 9, hinged or pivoted to the front side of said upright, adapted to fall by gravity and bear against the beveled or curved end bar or arm 4, so as to hold said plate 8 in engagement with the rack-teeth.
Pivoted to one side of the upright orstandard 7 is a rearwardiy-extending foot-lever 10, around which and the last 12 passes an endless belt or band 13, by which the last is securelyheld in position. The upright- 3 is pro- Vided with a series of rack-teeth 14, with which said lever engages to hold it in place.
Secured to the front cross-bar 2 is a standard 15, provided with a recess in its upper end, designed to receive the shank of a peg float or cutter or a heel-clinch.
The operation will be readily understood. The last is placed upon the uprights 3 and 7, the upright 7 supporting the toe and 3 the heel thereof, with the band 13 passing around the same and also around the lever 10, by depressing which by the foot and engaging it with the rack-teeth 14 the lastis securely held in position.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is In a shoe-jack, the combination, with the base, the stationary upright, and the forwardly-projecting arm pivoted thereto, having beveled or curved upper side and a series of rackteeth on its underside, of the pivoted upright having a slot through which said arm passes,
a transverse plate adapted to engage with said teeth, a hinged or pivoted plate adapted to bear upon the beveled or curved end of said arm, and a foot-lever pivoted to said pivoted upright, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILEY MONROE JONES.
