Description

(No Model.)
C. E. HART.
LATCH HANDLE. No. 476,636. Patented June 7, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT much.
CHARLES E. HART, OF NEW? BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
LATCH-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,636, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed March 22, 1892. Serial No. 426,032. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HART, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latch-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, wherebyany one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The object of my improvement is to pro duce a strong, simple, and comparatively inexpensive latch-handle of thin metal; and to this end my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the handle as a whole, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a latclrhandle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the handle and latch. Fig. 3 is a detail view in central section of these parts. Fig. 4 is a detail view in cross-section. Fig. 5 is a detail view, in cross-section, of a modified form of the handle. Fig. 6 is a detail View in cross-section of another modified form of the handle.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes the body of the handle; Z), the latch that is supported in the latch-socket a in the handle. This body part of the handle is made from a piece of thin metal, preferably lowgrade steel, that is bent to curved shape lengthwise necessary to give room for grasping the handle when it is attached to a door or like part by means of screws or like fastening means that pass through the openings in the feet Z) b The body portion of the handle is not only curved lengthwise, but is curved crosswise, the side portions a being turned outward to present a properly-shaped grasping-surface, and there is also a lengthwise corrugation 0 formed integral with the body part of the handle and extending from end to end of the central part from foot portion to foot portion. By this construction of the handle great strength and rigidity is given to the comparatively thin metal, so that amuch less weight of metal may be used in its construction than would be required for any other form of latch-handle that has heretofore been made of cast metal. The form of this latch is one that is particularly adapted to the present methods and processes of working plate metal, and as a result an extremely cheap and durable handle may be produced by the practice of my improvement.
A latch-socket a is formed through the foot Z), and the shank of alateh-lever 6 extends therethrough, this lever having a fulcrumnotch e on the underside, which rides on the edge d of the socket, the thumb-piece being located upon one side and the curved tail 6 of the latch extending on the other side and projecting underneath the latch in connection with which the latch lever and handle are commonly used.
My invention comprises the production of a handle from thin metal when such handle has a strengthening-rib formed lengthwise thereof and foot-pieces at the ends, whether such rib exists in the form of acentral corrugation, as shown in the sectional view in Fig. 5 of the drawings, or the curved edges, as shown in Fig. 6, and such forms of handles come within the scope of my invention.
It is obvious that the handle may be modified in general shape and outline in cross-section and in location of the strengthening device without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention As an improved article of manufacture, a latch-handle made of a single piece of sheet metal curved lengthwise to shape and terminating in flattened footportions and having an integral rib or corrugation extending lengthwise of the curved body portion of the handle, all substantially as described.
