Awe/aim:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT XV. GIESE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOlSTlNG-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,534, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed November 12,1890. Serial No. 371,171. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GIESE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting-Hooks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hoisting hooks adapted more particularly for use in hoisting materials from the hold of a ship and for other analogous purposes.
It has for its object to provide a hook which is supported vertically by means which will allow it to rotate and which has an external shield or cover recessed at its upper end to receive the head of the hook and its pivoted pin, and at the other end to receive and cover the point of the hook which is adapted to antomatically drop into said recess when the device is supported perpendicularly.
To that end my invention consists of a construction and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved hoisting-hook. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing in dotted lines the position of the end of the hook in its shield, the recess in the shield, and the headed pin of the supporting swivel-ring passing through the vertical recess in the shield; and Fig. 3 is a side view with the shield 01' cover in vertical section, showing its internal construction, and with the hook in dotted lines illustrating its vertical reciprocation.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the shield or cover, which is preferably constructed externally of the form shown in the several views and is hollowed out or recessed at D. It is also vertically recessed to admit the insertion therein of the headed pin 0 of the swivel hook or ring 0, the said parts being put together in such manner that the shield or cover A will be free to rotate laterally on the headed pin 0 of the ring 0. At the lower side of the widest end of the shield 01' cover A (which is at the top of the hollowed out portion D) is inserted a headed pin or bolt E, upon which swings pivotally the hook B, the latter being provided at that end with a thickened and laterally-recessed head B (see Fig. 1,) so that it shall fill the width between the sides of the hollowed-out portion D at the point where it is pivoted therein, and shall by this means be prevented from having any lateral play on the pivot-bolt E.
The hook B is constructed, preferably, of the curvature shown in the several views, and essentially with an upward-turned point B of such length that when the whole device hangs perpendicularly upon the supporting-ring C the point B of the hook will automatically fall into the hollowed-out portion D of the shield or cover A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In inserting the pin or bolt E the head E thereof should be countersunk, so that the top of the head E shall be flush with the exterior of the surface of the shield. (See Fig. 2.)
The principal use to which my invention is applicable is in hoisting heavy articles from the hold of the ship, which is now done by an ordinary hook, the point (as at B) of which is constantly caught in the projecting parts of the vessel and interferes with the operation of the hoisting-pulleys. This difficulty is entirely overcome by my device, as the shield or cover A at all times protects the point B of the hook, while at the same time the construction and arrangement of the several parts are such that the hook B itself has a free vertical reciprocation on its pivot-pin E, and the shield A, together with the hook B, has a free lateral rotation on the headed pin 0' of the supporting swivel-ring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hoisting-hook consisting of a shield or cover A, recessed on its under surface at one end to adapt it to cover the point of a hook and at the other end to receive the head of the hook and its bearings, a supporting swivelring having a headed pin 0 fitting loosely in a vertical recess in the shield or cover, wherev by the latter may rotate thereon, and a curved hook with a thickened head B having its bearings upon a bolt E, passingthrough said recess and secured therein by countersunk In testimony whereof I have hereunto nfnuts, said parts being, constructed, combined, fixed my signature this 5th day of Novemand arranged substantially as set forth, in her, A. D. 1890.
order that the reciprocation of the hook will ROBERT XV. GIESE. 5 cause its point to fail with certainty into the Vitnesses:
recess provided therefor when the device is JOHN R. NOLAN,
suspended perpendicularly. H. T. FENTON.
