lINiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CORSCADEN, OF NEV BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY WORKS, OE SAME PLACE.
MNUFACTURE OF HINGES..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 476,521, dated J une 7, 1892.
Application filed December 21, 1891. Serial No. 415,803. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS ConsoADnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 1 o the manufacture of strap-hin ges, and the main object of my improvements is economy in production.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a plate or sheet of metal with the outlines of several hinge-leaf blanks marked thereon in proper relation to each other for showing the manner of cutting said blanks therefrom, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a strap-hinge as made from such 2o blanks.
I take a strip or plate of metal of the desired thickness and of a width equal to the knuckle portion or butt of one hinge-leaf blank and the opposite end of another blank and cut two rows of blanks therefrom of the form shown, with the middle knuckle-blank 2 on the blank A and the narrow knuckleblanks 3 on the blank B. These knuckleblanks are cut one from the other, as shown in 3o Fig. l, and as in cutting leaf-blanks for the ordinary strap-hinge. Instead, however, of the ordinary form of a strap-hinge leaf, I make my blanks straight upon one edge 5 from end to end in a line extending at right angles to the knuckle end of the blank. The opposite edge of the blank I preferably make straight and parallel thereto for a short distance at its tip end el, and from that point it has an oblique edge (i, that entends to the knuckle end 4o of the leaf-body. This end on the blank A is in transverse line with the junction of the leaf-body and knuckle-blank 2, and on the leaf B it is at the junction of the leaf-body and one of the knuckle-blanks 3. These blanks are cut in pairs from said strip or plate of metal, with their straight edges 5 either substantially parallel to the edge of said strip or in the line of said edges, so that the original edge of the strip or plate may form these straight edges of the blank, as shown in Fig. 1. 5o The knuckle-blanks are out one from the other, so that the leaf-blanks A B when cut out are arranged butt to butt and tip to tip in each row, and, furthermore, the obliqueline 6 and the outer edge of one of the knuckle- 55 blanks 3 divide a blank A from a blank B as they lie side by side, ivith the tip of each blank adjoining the butt of the blank at its side, the adjoiningtips being divided by the line 7,
as shown. Thus it will be seen that by making 6o the leaves of a new shape and cutting, as described, I am enabled to cut two rows of blanks from a strip of metal without any waste of stock. I
Fig. 2 shows a hinge in which the leaf A A, 65 with its knuckle 22, is formed from the leafblank A and knuckle-blank 2, the tip 4 and edges 5 and 6 corresponding with those in the blank, While the leaf B B, with its knuckles 33, is formed from the leaf-blank B and its 7o knuckle-blanks 3. I prefer to leave the tips with square corners, as shown; but, if desired, the corners may be rounded off, as indicated by the curved broken line S near the lower end of Fig. l, or even by making the tip shorter, as on the curved broken line 9 at the upper part of said figure, thereby making a little waste of stock.
I claim as my invention- In the manufacture of strap-hin ges, the here- 8o in-described method of cutting the blanks, which consists of cutting two rows of blanks from a strip or plate of metal of a width equal to the knuckle end of one blank and tip end of another blank, the blanks in each row be- 8 5 ing arranged butt to butt and tip to tip and divided, longitudinally by the oblique line (3 and one side edge of one knuckle-blank, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
