UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
DOCTOR FRANKLIN OLIVER, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
PAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,482, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed December 11, 1891. Serial No. 414,762. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DOCTOR FRANKLIN OLI- VER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented Improvements in Paper- Holders; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of paperholders, and especially to holders adapted to hold writing-paper for typewritin g machines when duplicate or triplicate copies are to be made, thus rendering it necessary to place two or three sheets of paper, with carbon-sheets between them, on the type-writer, causing much trouble and annoyance in holding them properly until secured by roller on type-writing machine. I overcome this diiiiculty by providing the following described holder.
It consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete description of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional end view. Fig. 3 is a sectional detailed view showing manner in which slight corrugations are formed on the top side of A at point 7.
A is a suitable piece of elastic material, preferably of gutta-percha, of suitable size and thickness. A portion of this piece A is formed in a scroll l, as shown. The other portion is bent at point 5, extending rearwardly a suitable distance, forming the base. The longitudinal edge 3 of the base portion is preferably scrolled to provide additional strength.
I are perforations in base used for erasing letters or phrases. By placing perforation over part desired to be erased the surrounding portion will prevent the erasure of other matter.
I further provide for greater utility of my invention by providing a ruled surface, as shown.
In Fig. 3, 8 is one of a number of corrugations formed on the top surface of A at 7, extending the length of the coil portion. These corrugations serve as a bearing for the paper, so that the pressure of 1 will bear on the paper at point of contact with these corrugations, which serve to hold sheets more secure.
Now it will be seen that if scrolled edge 3 and scroll l are held between the finger and thumb and slightly pressed together the result will be to uncoil scroll 1', thereby openingspace 7, as shown. In this space are placed the ends of the sheet and carbon 6'. By releasing this scroll it will by its elasticity recoil, firmly clamping the sheets between folds of the scroll, as shown at 7.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. In a paper-h0lder, the elastic scroll l, in combination with the base portion A, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. In a paper-holder, the elastic scroll having the corrugations 8, in combination with the base A, substantially as described.
3. In a paper-holder, the elastic scroll l, in combination with the perforated base A, substantially as described.
4. In a paper-holder, the elastic scroll 1, in combination with the ruled base A, substantially as described.
5. In a paperholder, the elastic scroll 1', in'
combination with the perforated and ruled base A, substantially as described.
0. In a paper-holder, the combination of the scroll 1' having corrugations S, with base-plate A, provided with a ruled surface, and perforations et, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
D. FRANKLIN OLIVER. [L. s] Witnesses:
IV. R. THOMAS, A. M. BENHAM.
