J. F. BEIGE.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
No. 476,444. Patented June 7,1892.
JOHN FARSEY BRICE,
ATENT- OFFICE.
OF OANTRIL, IOWA.
TEMPORARY BlNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,444, dated June 7, 1892.
Application filed January 11, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FARSEY BRIOE, a citizen of the United States, rcsidin g at Cantril, in the county of Van Enron and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders; and I do declare the following to be a f nll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of telnporary binders especially arranged for filing railroad tariff-lists. lleretofore these binders have been constructed of a series of longitudinal rigid strips embraced by flexible stubleaves-that is to say, a leaf placed upon opposite sides of the strips-and the matter to be bound is placed between the leaves and directly over the strips and rivets are passed through holes in the leaves and the paper held between them. In these old devices a great objection has been want of room, convenience, and wear. Now the particular purpose of my device is to overcome these objections and provide a neater, more convenient, and cheap binder, and one that will have a greater capacity in proportion to its size; and to this end my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an empty section of my improvement, and Fig. 2 an end view of my complete device with a portion of the stubs filled.
The reference-letter a denotes the usual separating-strips, which consist of pasteboard extending longitudinally of the back of the hook in which they are bound. Between the contiguous sides of each of these strips is glued or otherwise fastened a pair of flexible stubleaves Z), both of which are provided with regis tering eyelet-holesc for the reception of rivets Serial No. 417,727. (No model.)
(1. The leaves I) are formed bya single piece of flexible material folded in the middle toform a selvage edge e, and its free ends are folded back onto each other and glued between the strips a, and as two leaves are bound between the contiguous strips, four folds are thus glued together at one point. This construction is in contradistinction to those binders in which the two folds of each leaf are placed astride of each strip and a strip between each of said folds. In other words, my flexible leaves are bound between the strips a in separate pairs. By this arrangement a much larger capacity is given the binder, for it will be seen that there are in the present instance seven pairs of stub-leaves b to eight binding-strips a, while in the old devices hereinbefore described there would be fourteen bin din g-strips to eight pairs of stub-leaves.
My invention carries with it the advantage of a secure and neat binder, as the papers bound are not as liable to tearout as when they are placed on the outside of the stub-leaves, and a further advantage gained is in greatly enlarging the capacity of the book, and a still further advantage is the increased convenience in using.
It is apparent that my arrangement is susceptible of an infinite number of uses, as for a dry-goods-sample book, newspapers, time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In a temporary binder of the class described, a series of longitudinal binding-strips having separate pairs of double clamping-stubs bound between their contiguous sides, the outer end of said stubs being made stiffer and provided with registering holes, in the manner substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FARSEY BRICE.
