COMBINED TABLE, PRlE-DIEU, AND CONFESSIONAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,394, dated June '7, 1892.
Application nea February 5, 1892. serrano. 420,421. (naman.)
To @ZZ 1072/0772, it 72u03/ concern:
Be it known that I, Hnoron LAvmNE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Table, Prie-Dieu, and Confessional; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to produceV an article of furniture which may be used ordinarily as a table and may be converted readily to aform suitable for the sacred purposes of a prie-dieu or of a confessional.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation, partly broken out, showing the table as adjusted for a confessional. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line :c c of Fig. l, the position of the parts in the form of a table beingindicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the top when the article is in use as a table, the standard being in section and portions of the edge of the top being broken out. Fig. 4 is an under side view of the base.
The improved article consists, primarily, of a base, a standard, and a part which may be called a top, although it may assume a vertical as well as a horizontal position. The base A is in the form, preferably, of a low platform of such height and size that the penitent may kneel thereon. The standard B is made adj ustable in position upon the base, so that it may stand centrally upon the base, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the article is in use as a table, or may be pushed to one side, and yet support firmly the top C when the article is in use as a prie-dieu or confessional. In order that the standard may not be unstable upon the base, the latter is slotted, as at a a, and screws or bolts d d', which engage a plate D, preferably of metal, pass through the slots d a and engage with the standard B or with a suitable plate b, fixed to the lower end thereof. The plate D is itself slotted, as at d, to receive a bolt or screw d', which is screwed into the base A. By these means the standard is held firmly upon the base, while at the same time it may be shifted easily.
Near one side of the top C and on its under surface is hinged or pivoted, preferably by pins e e, which pass through a ledge or rim c of the top, a leaf E, and to the leafE 1s hinged a second leaf F, to which the top of the standard B is rigidly lined and which 1s held to move in a certain relation to the top by pins f f, projectingfrom the leaf and traveling in slots c c in the ledge or rim c. YVhen the article is in use as a table, both of the leaves E and F lie in the same plane and parallel with the top C and are there held by stops or latches c2, which are secured to the rim c and may be turned to overlap one of the leaves near the line where they are hinged together. Upon turning back the stops c2 .the top C may be swung from a horizontal to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. l and 2, in which position the leaf E overlies the leaf F in an inclined position and furnishes a rest for the elbows or head of the kneeling penitent. The leaf may beprovided with a ledge e to retain a devotional book or any other article placed upon the inclined shelf formed by the leaf.
For the purposes of a confessional the top C is made hollow or is formed with ways, as indicated at c3, in which Ymay slide a screen G, which is formed of rcticulated material supported by a frame, as shown, and which may be drawn out, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and held in its elevated position by springlatches g g.
It will be found that the device is easily adjusted for its different uses, is rm and stable in use, and is strong and durable in construction.
I claim as my inventionl. A table having a slotted base, a standard, a table-top having a hinged connection with said standard, a plate beneath the base, and bolts passed through the slots in the base and securing the standards rigidly to the plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. A table having a slotted base, a standard, a table-top having a hinged connection with said standard, a slotted plate beneath said base, bolts passed through the slots in said plate into the under side of said base, and bolts passed through the slots in the base IOO and securing the standards to said plate, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a top, of a leaf hinged to the under side of the top and a second leaf hinged to the first and having a sliding connection with the top, and a supporting-standard secured rigidly to said second leaf, substantially as shown and described.
Ll. The combination of a standard, a top having a hinged connection with said standard, a screen formed of reticulated material, supported in a frame and sliding, in Ways in said top, and latches to hold said screen in elevated position, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of a standard, a base to which said standard is adjustably secured, a top, a leat` hinged to the under side of said HECTOR LAVIGNE.
Vitnesses:
A. N. JESBERA, W. B. GREELEY.
