Description

(Model.)
W. LEVIN. PRUNING IMPLEMENT.
No, 476,279, Patented June 7, 1892.
wir ne as en' rn: Noms rusas nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn cV UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
VILLIAM LEVIN, OF NEW YQRK, N. Y.
PRUNING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,279, dated June *7, 1892- Applieation led May 14, 1891 Serial No. 3 92,759. (Model.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM LEVIN, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pruning-Shears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in pruning-shears, the object being to so construct pruning-shears that the edge of the blade will always be protected except during the operation of the device.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and colnbinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are views of the shears, one showing the blades closed and handles together and the other showing the blades open and handles separated; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
A represents one of the blades ofthe shears, and B the other blade. The blade A is com posed of two plates ct ct, which are extended and have plates c secured thereto to produce a handle c', the same rivets which secure the plates together alsoserving to secure the plates c thereto. The fixed handle c is preferably made straight on its inner side and recessed,`
as at c2, on its outer side, said handle being also provided with a recess, as at c3. The handle c being thus formed, the free end thereof is intended to rest not against the part of the hand at the opposite side thereof from the thumb, but against the fleshy part of the hand in proximity to the thumb, and the recess c2 is intended to rest against the web connecting the thumb and foreiinger, the inside of the second joint of the thumb being adapted to rest in the recess c3. The plates da of the blade A are recessed, as at d, to produce jaws d d2 at about forty-five degrees to the body of the device, said recess d lbeing adapted to receive the twig to be cut, and the space between said jaws being adapted to limit the size of the branch or twig to be cut bythe implement. The blade B is pivotally connected between the plates ct, the free end of said blade 1 and 2, and provided with plates f to produce handle f. The cuttingedge g of the blade B is adapted to enter between the jaws d?, and thus be protected when not in use and the shears are closed, and when the shears are open the cutting-edge will be protected between the plates a ct.
With the device constructed as above set forth it is very simple, comparatively cheap to manufacture, and effectual in the performance of its functions.
By constructing the handles of the device as above set forth it may be held by the hand in a position at right angles to the position in which a pen is usually held in the hand in writing.
Having fully described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, l. As an article of manufacture, a pair of pruning-shears comprising a pair of blades,
oted between the plates, the blade composed of the two plates having a notch formed in its edge in such position that the cutting-edge of the other blade falls outside of the edge of the notch when the other blade is in either of its extreme positions, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a blade composed of a pair of plates secured together at suitable distances apart, said blade having a recess and a pair of jaws formed at its outer end, one jaw longer than the other, of ablade pivoted between these plates and adapted to cooperate therewith, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM LEVIN.
