Be it known that I, ROBERT P. FULLER, ot"

Machias, inthe county of Washington and State of Maine, have invented a new and nseful Improvement in Ships Blocks; and l do hereby declarethat the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make 'and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whlch- Figure 1 isa-side View of @block constructed 'metallicstrap which encompasses the hl0ck,the

strap being fitted in `grooves in the cheeks, so that the outer surfaces of the forlner will be `ii cs hv with the outer surfaces of the latter, and

all arranged as hereinafter set forth.

-A A represent the two cheeks ot'jthe blocks, which may be ot the n'sual form and cnt out in such a manner that the grain'ot the wood will have a transverse position-that is to say, be

` at right'angles with the majordiameterot' thel same and the metal strap'l, which 'encompasses the block. (See Figui.)

The cheeks A Aare connected at their ends by strips C C, which lleave a; space between the cheeks of sucient capacity to receive the sheave or pulley of the block. p (SeeiFig. 2.)`

VThe metal strap B is composed of two parallel side pieces, a/ a, andtwo end pieces, b b',

'one of which, b, is at the arse ofthe block and the other, b', at the opposite end. The side pieces, a a, a-re let into` grooves made in the exterior o1 the cheeks A Ag; `l'mlthe end`- pieces, b b', project beyond the endotthe block, the hook D being connected' to b" by'l swei'.

The several lparts of the block areput -together by first inserting the --cheeks A A in the strap B, and then placi11g;and securing,

'the strips Uf() between the ends of the cheeks` By this vmode-of construction a very strong and durable block is obtained, the cheeks bein g'p'i evented from splitting on account of the same having a transverse .positionrrelatively with the side pieces, a a, of the'strap, and all I the parts -bound firtnly together.
