LEAF TURNER.-
No. 475,393. Patent ed m 24, 1892.
4 ALEXANDER c. FRANKEL ALEXANDER (I. FRAN KEL,
LEAF-T PATENT ()FFICE.
OF NEVFARK, NEW JERSEY.
URNER.
SPE'LJZFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,393, dated May 24, 1892.
Serial No. 25,l16. (No modcld T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, ALEXANDER C. FRANK- EL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf- Turners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices designed for turning the leaves of books, music, and the like; and it consists in various features and details hereinafter setforth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure .l is a perspective View of my improved leaf-turner as it appears in use. Fig. 2isa top plan view of a slightly-different construction, and Fig. 3 a front face view of the form of bearingblock in which the turning-rods are journaled.
A indicates a board orframe, which may be of most any desired construction, but which will advisahly be provided with clamps or levers B atits lower corners, by means of which the covers of the book or piece of music may be clamped, and blocks or stops 0 at its lower edge, which serve to prevent the book or piece of music from falling off, the board.
D, Figsd and 3, indicates a block or bearing, which is secured to the upper face of the board A near its lower edge. This block or bearing is provided with a series of seats o holes a a (L2, arranged in different planes, to receive the axes b Z1 b of the leaf-turning rods E, E, and E At the inner ends of the journals or axes Z) b b the rods E E are curved or bent laterally, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while at the outer ends the said rods are curved or bent in the opposite direction, so as to form handles 0 0' c To use the device the book orpiece of music is placed upon the board and the rods inserted between the leaves. In order to turn the uppermost leaf, it is only necessary to actuate the handle at the extreme left of the group and thereby rock the rod E upon its pivot 11 so as to throw it over to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. By pressing upon the ncxtlever or handle 0 the rod E will be rocked upon its pivot and thrown over to the oppositesideof said pivot or axis and willearry with it the leaf beneath which it is placed, and by pressing upon the lever or handle a the last rod E will also be turned over and carry with it the leaf which rests thereon.
While in the drawings I have shown but three turning-rods and levers, I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself to this precise number, as it is obvious that the num-- ber may be increased or diminished without in anyway departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be noticed upon reference to Fig. 1 that the arms or rods E, E, and E extend only halfway up the page or sheet; but, if desired they may be made longer and extend ontircly from the top to the bottom of the page or sheet, as'showir in Fig. 2, in which case the turning-rods will be made in the form of bows and will he supported at their upper ends as well as at their lower ends. WVhen this plan is adopted, I prefer to make the supports or bearings in which the rods are journaled out of a single piece of sheet metal, which has its ends turned up and perforated, as at D D.
The holes in the bearings .D at the upper end will of course be in line with the holes at the lower bearing 1), and the rods which are carried in said bearings will be provided at their upper ends with short journals (Z, d, and (2 corresponding to the axes or journals Z) Z) Z1 \Vhile I prefer to make the arms gor turning-rods E E curved, this is not essential.
Upon the under side of the board or frame A, l secure two or more hooks F, by means of which the device may be secured to a music stand or rack. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a leaf-tin'ner, the combination, with a board' or frame A, of a block or bearing 1 provided with a series of holes or openings in different horizontal planes, and a series of rods journaled in said bearing-block, all substantially as shown and described.
2.,111 combination with a board or frame A and a block or bearing secured thereto, a series of arms or turning-rods journaled therein out of line with one another, said arms being adapted to be inserted between the leaves to be turned and haying their lower ends extended below the bearing-block and fashioned into handles or levers by which to turn them.
3. In combination with a board or frame A and a bcaring-block secured thereto, a series of turning rods or arms jonrna )(l therein out
