SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,221, dated May 17, 1892.

Application filed June 29, 1891. Serial No. 397,939. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that L CARL SEGERROT PALM, a citizen of the United States, residing near Foster, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Derrcks for Loading Carts, Wagons, and Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make .and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in a folding derrick for loading carts, Wagons, and cars, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the anneXed drawings.

.The object of my invention is to facilitate th-e loading of a cart, wagon, or car with s11- gar-cane. I attain this object by the mech-V anism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the derrick. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the derrick folded. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the ring passed through the standards.

Similar letters refer to similarparts throughont the several views.

In the drawings, A refers to the uprights or body of the derrick, which are preferably constructed of gas or water pipe having pieces B attached, as shown in Fig. l, thus preventing uprights A from sinking beyond acertain depth when derrick is in position for use.

C is an arm attached to one of the uprights A and by which the derrick can be raised and placed in the position shown in dotted lines when it is desired to dump a bundle of cane.

D is an attachment placed on one of the u prights A for attaching rope E. when it is desired to hold a bundle of cane at a fixed elevation.

Fare blocks, which may be ot' any desired construction.

G is adisk, upon which a` metal ring II is rigidly attached, it being a complete ring for the purpose of strengthening the disk for holding the uprights in position and at the same time -allowing them free and easy movement by the said ring passing through the end of each upright A and holding saine in nearproximity to each other.

K is a flange or bearing, upon which uprights A rest when in use.

- L is a nut for securing bolt and hook,- to which one of the blocks F is attached.

In practice the cane is cut and placed in bundles, as shown by M, having a sling N placed around each bundle, the derrick when notin use being folded, as shown in Fig. 8, and when in position for use the uprights A are separated in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and each bundle of cane is elevated, as shown 1n Fig. 1, and placed either in car or cart.

By the use of my folding derrick` much tune and labor are saved, and I am enabled to load a car or cart with two men, where formerly it required the services of ten mento perform the same labor. v

Having described my invention andthe manner in which the same is constructed and operated, I would state that what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-

In a folding derrick for loading cane,such as described, the combination of the uprights A, with pieces B thereon, and disk G, provided With a ring H, the latter passing through the ends of uprights A, and disk G, having anges K thereon, as set forth.
