PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,210, dated May 17, I892. Application filed June 1, 1891- Serial No. 394,688. I (No model.) I

To a,v whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, IVIIOHAEL FLANNERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Towanda, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games or Puzzles and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to toy puzzles and games; and it consists of what I call bugs and toads.

It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan, Fig. 2 a longitudinal View in elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 3 a smaller longitudinal sectional view, of a portion of the invention, illustrating the op eration of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A is a circular base or platform .composed of any suitable light material, and B a thin vertical circular fence or wall built on and extending entirely around said base to inclose a field thereon.

C is a divisional wall of S shape, as shown, one end of which is joined to the wallB, while the balance of the said wall extends into the field and divides the same into a tortuous road D, leading to an open space E, formed between the large bend of the S-wall O and the outer Wall E and designated as a home.

F F F are traps made in the form of toads, placed at different positions on the road D. They are preferably arranged, as shown, alternately on opposite sides of the road. These traps are constructed, preferably, of light metallic material stamped up and colored and otherwise made to represent toads. The under side of the toad (designated by the letter 71) is made of a separate piece or plate pivoted to a pin 2', extending through the sides of the toad near its front at about a point where the front legs join the body. The portion of the plate It in front of the pivot constitutes the lower jaw of the toad. That portion of the plate extending back of the pivot constitutes the belly of the toad and is heavier of the toads.

The operation of the device may be described as follows: The bugs P are placed in the space inclosed between the end of the divisional wall 0, where it joins the outer wall B, and designated in the drawings as the start. The object of the game is to get the bugs around the road D to the home without permitting them to fall into the months This may be done by careful manipulation and tipping by the hand of the device. Should one of the bugs roll or otherwise be forced into the channel between the front legs of a toad, it will come in contact with the hinged piece h, raise the same, and fall into the trough T, from whenceit will roll out of the trap into the hand of the operator. Immediately on thus tipping the piece It the under jaw of the toad will fall, giving the appearance to the toad of having swallowed the bug.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a toy of the character herein described, provided with balls, in combination with a base, a vertical wall on said base, a winding S-shaped wall extending from the vertical wall and terminating near the center of the space inclosed by said vertical wall, thereby forming a tortuous road between said 8- shaped and vertical wall and leaving a large open space or field at the termination of said road, traps located on said road, each trap provided with a plate forming an under jaw and base and said plate pivoted so as to normally close the trap and to be opened by contact of a ball therewith, and a receivingtrough beneath said traps, substantially as described.
