Be it known that I, JOHN P. HUBER, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Seats, of which the following is a full,clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in vehicle -seats; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my complete invention, showing' the same attached to the ordinary seat of a vehicle and in a position to bo used. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the back of the seat in a folded position. Fig. 3 is a perspectve View in detail, showing the manner of securing the back tothe seat or casting secured to the same. Fig. 4is a side elevation of the arms employed, to which the foot-rest is attached, and showing the manner in which the same are secured to the seat. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the casting, which is attached to the 'under surface of the seat and the parts attached to the same. Fg. 6 is a cross-section taken on the line of Fig. 5, but somewhat enlarged in order to show more clearly the parts employed for effecting a movable connection; and Fig. '7 is a perspective view of the shaft which I employ in attaching the arms for the foot-rest to the casting carried by the seat.

My present invention consists of improvemeuts over my pending application, filed No- Vember 10, 1891, Serial No. 411,453.

The improvements consist, essentially, of a detachable back for the seat, which may be removed from the said seat when the same is not desired to be used, and, further, with the foot-rest which is movably secured to the seat and which may be folded upon the same or entirely detached from the said seat when so desired.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a.

buggy-seat, which is of the ordinary construction and to which myinvention is easily any suitable manner, and near the edge of said seat is a cleat, and opposite said cleat and at a suitable distance therefrom is also secured to the seat a turn-clamp 4, between which cleat and clamp the stationary plate 5 of the seat is 'adapted to be clamped after the end of the same has been inserted into the staple 2, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By turning the clamp 4 in a vposition opposite to that shown in Fig. 1 plate' 5, and consequently the seat, may be entirely removed from the vehicle-seat.

6 represents a second plate, which is united to the plate 5 by means of a hinge 7, constituting a movable connection and allowing the plate 6 to be turned back upon said plate 5 when it is desired to fold the seat in a compact position.

8 represents an additional seat, which is secured in any suitable manner to the arm 6,

and to the under surface of said seat is seand is adjustable'to any length, the upper l portion 10 of which is provided with a Vertical opening and the lower portion 11 pro- Vided with a rounded extension 12, which is adapted to freely moveor slide in said opening formed in the portion 10, and by the manipulation of the hand-screw 13 the said leg 9 will be made adjustable. The lower end of the leg 9 is pointed and said end adapted to be inserted into a suitable opening formed in a plate 14, which is secured to the bottom or floor of the vehicle-body, as shown in Fig. 1.

15 represents a curved brace which partially constitutes the back of the seat 8 and which is preferably made of metal, suitably shaped and finished, and the same covered with leather or upholstering, as may be desirable. To the said brace 15 are secured four plates 16, which are provided with suitable openings, to which the hinged supports for` Vided with a depression 18 where the same is united with the plate 6, and said depression is of a length corresponding to the width of said plate, and when the parts are united, as shown in Fig.1,and a'bolt 19 passed through said portion of the support and the plate 6 the part will-be rigidly united. The ends of the brace 15 are also provided with supports 20, which are attached to the brace 15 in a similar manner, and the free ends of said arms formed into hook-shaped extensions 21, which are adapted to be passed into suitable openings formed for their reception in the casting carried by the under surface of the seat 8, forming a rigid connection between said arms or braces and the seat when the parts are united. The said arms are also provided with elongated openings 22 near the hinged ends of the same, through which a strap 23 is adapted to be passed in order to prevent the child from falling` out or off of said seat 8.

In applying the back of the seat the hooked ends of the'supports 20 are first inserted into the openings formed in the casting, after which the rear support is attached to the plate 6 by means of` a bolt, as already described.

24 represents acasting, which is secnred to the front under surface of the seat8, and said casting provided with four cars 25, which are arranged in pairs, by means of which the footrest is movably secured to the bottom of the seat. Said casting 24 also projects a suitable distance beyond the sides of the seat 8 and said projecting ends of the casting provided with elongated openings 26, which are adapted to receive the -hooked ends 21 of the supports 20, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The ears 25 are each provided with cir-' cular openings 27, which are in alignment with one another, through which a shaft 28 is adapted to be passed and turned. The cars l25 (to the right looking at Fig. 5) are each provided with extensions 29, as best shown in Fg. 6, allowing sutficient space for the lugs 30, carried by the shaft 28, to pass 'in uniting the several parts, as hereiuafter described.

31 represents two arms, the upper ends of which are provided with horizon tal extensions 32, and said extensions provided with elongated openings 33, the terminations of which are enlarged in order to allow the rounded portions of the shaft 28 to freely turn in said openings when it is desired to attach or remove the arms 31, and consequently the footrest, from the seat 8. The lower ends of the arms 31 are provided with supports 34, upon which the foot-rest 35 is adapted to come in contact When the said rest is in the position shown in Fig. 1. The under surface of the foot-rest 35 is provided withftwo plates 36, which are secured to the same in any mechanical manner, and the perforated portions or ends of said plates projecting a suitable distance beyond the rear edge of the same for allowing a shaft or rod 37 to be passed through the said plates and also through suitable openings formed in the lower ends of the arms 31, forming a movable connect-ion between' said rest and arms and allowing the said rest to be folded in a position shown in Fig. 4. When the arms 31 are in the position shown in Fig. 4, the upper surfaces of the horizontal extensions 32 of said arms will come in contact with the lower surface of the casting 24, and therefore hold the said arms in the proper an gle.

38 represent extensions formed with the plates 36 and are adapt-ed to come in contact with the rests or supports 34 when the rest 35 is in position, as shown in Fg. 1, to be used.

The shaft which I employ for attaching the arms of the foot-rest to the casting carried by the seat 8 is especially constructed for the purpose, the construction and manipulation of which I shall now proceed to describe. The said shaft 28 is round in cross-section, and one end of the same isV somewhat flattened, providing means for turning and manipulating the same. The lugs 30, formed on said shaft, are a suitable distance apart but of such a distance as to correspond to the distance between the cars 25, formed with the casting 24, in order that the said shaft may be turned after the same has been inserted in a position, as shown in Fig. 5. The said shaft 21 is also provided with cut-away portions 39, which are located a suitable distance apart, the length of which corresponds to the distance between the two pairs of lugs 25, which when the cut-awayportions of said shaft are in said position, the slots 33 being of a corresponding width to said-portions of the shaft, will allow the horizontal portions 32 of the arms 31 to be moved for folding the said arms.

VVhen it is desired to unite the arms 31 to the casting 24, the enlarged portions or terminal ends of the slots 33,formed.in the horizontal extensions 32 of the same, must necessarily be in alignment with the openings formed in the cars 25, as shown in Fig. 6, allowing the rounded portion of the shaft 38 to freely move in said openings formed in the ears and also through the enlarged portions of the slots 33. The shaft 28 on being completely inserted in. said openings and partially turned the said arms 34 will be firmly locked to the casting 24 and also the said shafttprevented from moving out of said opening. In other words,'the cut-away'portions 39 of the shaft allow the extensions 32 of the arms to be moved when the said shaft is in its proper position; but when the said shaft is slightly turned the widest portion of the said shaft being Wider than the narrowest portions of the slots 33 prevents the said extensions 32 from being moved in a horizontal direction.

VVhen it is not desired to use the seat 8 and its parts, the entire mechanism may be detached from the seat 1 by the proper manipulation of the clamp 4; or, if desired, the rest or back for the seat 8 may be renioved from the same, and also the foot-rest and the seat IIO befolded upon itself and the detachable parts-name1y, the back for the seat and the foot-rest-placed in any conveuient portion of the vehicle.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the parts composing my invention are alldetachable, or said parts may be folded upon one another without detaching the parts, as may be deemed desirable.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. AVehicle-seat adapted to be folded upon itself and a back or rest adapted to be removably attached to the same, substantially as described.

2. A vehicle-seat mounted upon a folding support, a back or rest removably secured to the same, and a foot-rest also removably secured to said seat and adapted to be folded, substantially as described.

3. A vehicle-seat com prisin g a back or rest,

'a brace 15 of suitable shape, supports hinged to the same, the opposite ends ot' which are adapted to be removably secured to said seat, and a folding step also attached to the said seat, substantially as described.

4. A vehicle-seat consistin g of aback o'r rest, supports hinged to the same, the center one of which is secured to the said seat by means of a suitable bolt, hooks formed on the ends of the end supports for said brace and adapted to be inserted in suitable openings formed in the casting 24, securedto said seat, and a footrest adapted to be secured to said casting by means of a removable bolt or shaft by properly manipulating the same, substantially as described.

6. A vehicle-seat having a foot-rest and a bolt, such as 28, provided with cut-away portions 39 and lugs 30 for looking said bolt and allowing the said' rest to be turned or folded, substantially as described.

7. A vehicle-seat having a casting 24 attached to the under surface of 'the seat, ears 25, formed with the same, holes formed in the said ears, arms, such as 31, provided with horizontal extensions 32,slots 33, formed in the said extensions, the terminations of which are enlarged, a shaft, such as 28, provided with cut-away portions 39 and lugs 30, adapted to be passed through said openings formed in the ears and through the said slots 33, and a foot-rest, such as 35, hinged to the lower ends of the said arms and adapted to rest upon suitable supports 34:, formed on the lower ends of 'said arms, substantially as described.

8. A vehicle-seat consisting of a back or rest, a casting 24, adapted to be secured to the under surface of the said seat, the ends of which extend beyond the same, openings, such as 26, formed in the said extensions,providing means for securing the said back to the seat, ears 25, formed with the said casting and provided with openings 27, extensions, such as 29, formed in two of the said ears,supports, such as 31, having horizontal extensions 32, elongated openings, such as 33, formed in the said extension, the terminations of which are enlarged, a shaft 28, having cut-away portions, such as 39, and lugsv 30, and a foot-rest, such as 35, movably secured to the lower end 'of said arm and adapted to rest upon suitable supports formed with the said arms, substantially as described.
