SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,970, dated May 1'7, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that. I, JOSEPH RIMMEB, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, refer-' ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figurel is an end elevation of my improved sofa-bed represented as folded and in position to be employed as a sofa; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the bed open; Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 5 an elevation illustrating certain details of construction.

Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures 0f the drawings.

My invention relates especially to a collapsible or folding beds which are particularly adapted for use as sofas; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set fort-l1 and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:

The bed is formed in two sections A B, the section A comprising a frame consisting of end pieces I) and a slatted bottom d, supported by legsf. Connecting the front of. the end pieces I) there is a brace g, which serves as a foot-board when the device is employed as a bed. To each end piece b, on its inner face, a link h is pivoted by one end to swing vertically and to the rear. The section 13 comprises side pieces 2', connected by slats j and provided with hinged and longitudinally-folding legs is. A head-piece z is hinged to the outer end of the member B, said piece being adapted to fold downward to the rear when the member is in vertical position, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and being sustained by cords 15 when employed as a bed, as in Figs. 3 and 4. Each sofa end piece I) has a grooved lug 16 at its rear end,

into which take studs 17 on the side pieces 1' at about their centers and support said memberB in vertical or upright position, although it is allowed to swing somewhat by this pivotal connection.

A mattress 18 is disposed in the ordinary manner on the slats. A covering 20 of plush or other suitable material is used to cover said mattress when the device is employed as a sofa.

In the use of my improvement the back member B is turned downward on the hinged links it and the legs turned outward and locked by the latch D, supporting said back. When employed as a sofa, the back Bis elevated in the position shown in Fig. 1. The shortened slaty,falling,leavesaspace between the adjacent slats dj, into which the fold of the mattress 18 projects, as shown by dotted lines in said figure. The legs kare folded in ward against the slats j and the head-board 2 turned outward. The studs 17, entering the grooves in the lugs 16 of the sofa members, hold said members together. The device in this position may be employed for the ordinary purposes of sofas, the mattress being covered by the covering 20.

The peculiar arrangement of the parts described renders the device exceedingly simple and far cheaper in construction than sofabeds orinarily employed.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is IOO 1. In a sofa-bed, the body member having end pieces and a bottom composed of slats, the rearmost one of which is some distance forward of the rear edge of said end pieces, in combination with the swinging member comprising side pieces and a slatted body, links pivoted to the inner faces of said end pieces, swinging in vertical planes below said bottom, and hinged to the front ends of said side pieces, folding legs adapted to support the swinging member when horizontal, a mattress connecting the two members and folding between the adjacent slats therein when the device forms a sofa, and means for connecting the swinging member to the body member when the former is vertical, substantially as described.

2. Ina sofa-bed, the body member having end pieces and a bottom composed of slats, the rearmost one'of which is some distance forward :of the lea-r edge of said end pieces, in combination with the swinging member comprising side pieces and a slatted body, links pivoted to the inner faces of said end pieces, swinging in vertical planes below said bot-tom, and hinged to the front ends of said sidepieces, folding legs adapted to support the swinging'me'mber when horizontal, a'short slat between'said links,arms hinged to this slat and to the adjacent slats of thetwo members,a mattress connecting'the members resting on said short slat when the device forms a bed and folding above it when the device forms a sofa,-and means for connecting the swinging member to the body member when the former is vertical, substantially as described.

3. In a sofa-bed, the body member having end pieces and a bottom composed of slats, the rearmost one-of which is some distance forward of the rear edge of said end pieces, in combination with the swinging member comprising side pieces and a slatted body, links pivoted to the inner faces of said end pieces, swinging in Vertical planes below said bottom, and hinged to the front ends of said the swinging member when horizontal, a short slat between said links, arms hinged to this slat and to the adjacent slats'of the two members, and means for connecting the swinging member to the body member when the former is vertical, substantially as described.

4. In a sofa-bed, the body member having end pieces and a bottom composed of slats, the rearmost one of which is some distance forward of the rear edge of said end pieces, in combination with the swinging member comprising side pieces and a slatted bo'd'y, links pivoted to the inner faces of said end pieces, swinging in vertical planes below said bottom, and hinged to the front ends of said side pieces, folding legs adapted to support the swinging member when horizontaha short slat between said links, arms loosely connect ing said slat with the adjacent slats of the two members, notched lugs on the rear edges of said end pieces, and studs projecting ontward from said side pieces at about the centers of their lengths and adapted to engage said lugs when the swinging member is vertical, substantially as described.
