WARDROBE-BEDSTEAD.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, W'ILLIAM D. SNYDER, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to folding bedsteads in which a coil-Wire or elastic bed-bottom is used in conjunction with the bed-frame and adapted to be drawn taut and slackened by the operation of opening and closing the bed; and the object of my improvement is to simplify and better the connection offsuch bedbottom Vwith the head end of the bed-frame for supporting and operating the same in the manner above indicated. This object I have attained in the bedstead constructed as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a central section of a closed bedstead of the class mentioned containingr my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view of the saine open.

In the drawings, A designates the stan dard, and B the bed-frame. The bed-frame is pivoted to the standard at a in an ordinary way and has automatic foot-legs l). C is the elastic bed-bottom, which is secured at the foot end to a rail c, made fast at each of its ends to the side rails of the bed-frame, and at the head end to a rail c', which is provided with an end piece c2, secured to each end of it and adapted to come on the inside of the side rails of the bed-frame. The said side rails are provided on each side of the bed with a pin a', secured by means of a plate a2, integral with said pin and Vattached to said side rails by screws. The pieces c2 are provided with a slot c3, by which they are loosely connected with the bed-i` rame by the engagement of said slots over the pins a. The ends of the rails c' are provided with a pin e, projecting from said ends and adapted to enter and play in a slot e in a board or plate E, attached to each side of the standard, the slot being open at one side at the top. When the bed is closed, these pins e drop down to the bottom of said slots e', and when the bed is opened they rise therein until they strike stop e2, formed by a short curve at the top of said slots e' and about on a level with the bed-bottom C when let down to the horizontal. The bed-frame stops in horizont-al position before the pieces c2 and bed-bottom have passed the center of motion, so that the pull of the bed-bottom will hold rail c up against stop e2 under the weight of the occupant while the bed is open. The pillow-board F is hinged to the rails c and has its top edge rested against stops f, secured to the side boards of the standard. A counterpoise G is provided for balancing the bedfframe, and springs I-I are adapted to support the central portion of the bed-bottom.

The connection of the bed-bottom with the head and of the bed-frame by means of the slotted end pieces of rails c', engaging pins a of the bed-frame, in conjunction with pins e of said rail, engaging slots c of the standard, operates as follows: When the bed-frame is upright, pins a are at the outer ends of slots c3, and pins c rest in the bottom of slots c and support rail c. During the first part of the letting down the bed, pins a travel toward the opposite ends of slots c3 Without raising rail c. By this part of the movement the bedbottom is straightened so as to exert thereafter a pull on said rail, which pull by the further movement raises said rail to the top of slots e by sliding pins e upward therein. The movement thus far also brings pins a to the inner ends of slots c3, and pins a then carry the weight4 of rail c and raise pins e against stops e2. On closing the bed the pins e enter the slots e at the point where the pins a begin to recede in slots c3, and Where but for said slots said pins would begin to pull rail c forward.
