STANDARD FOR ELECTRIC WIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 474,847, dated May 1*?, 1892.

Be it known that I, EDMUND C. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extensible Standards for Electric Wires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stand or support for electric wires; and it consists in substantially the construction pointed out in the following specification and claims.
Like letters and figures refer to the same parts in the several figures of the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
My invention maybe carried out by a variety of construct-ions; but the preferred form is shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings and will now be described. 1
A designates a post with a pointed or sharp lower end and with a lug or bracket a cast upon or otherwise rigidly secured to its upper end. This lug or bracket has an opening therethrough for the passage of the standard B, whose position therein may be fixed by the set-screw b or otherwise. This standard may have formed integrally therewith or rigidly affixed thereto an arm E, and suitable sharp points c should be made to project above the standard and arm. To the outer end of the standard may be properly secured any suitable or Well-known form of clamp, such as d, for an electric Wire e. This clamp is not specially described, for its construction forms no part of my invention; but some sort of insulation, such as f, should be interposed between the clamp and arm. One end of a screwthreaded rod C rests upon the top of the post A and the other end of such rod passes through a nut formed in the bevel-gear g, which latter is supported upon a bracket formed on the lower end of a bar D, and said bevel meshes with a miter h, carried by the same bracket and capable of being revolved by a handle t'. The bar D extends to and rests against the arm E, and the screw-threaded rod after passing through the nut in the bevel extends behind the bar, or in case the bar is a yoke between the branches of the yoke, as indicated in dotted lines.
The operation of this construction is as follows: The electric wire having been secured in the clamp, or frequently before the wireis clamped, the whole 'device (which I term an extensible stand is placed so that the points at its opposite ends are adjacent to the bottom and top or other opposing walls of the mine, and the bevel-wheels are rotated, so as to cause the screw-threaded rod to revolve, and consequently force the pointed post and standard in different directions until the points take a firm hold in the walls of the mine, when they may be set to such position by adjusting the set-screw l. It will be understood that by the construction shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings the screw-threaded-rod forces the bar D upward against and lifts the arm E, together with the points c and the standard B, and pushes downward the post A.
While my extensible standard is particularly designed for, carrying the wires for a trolley system in a mine, yet it is adapted to carry the Wires for electric light and various other systems.
It is obvious many variations may be made in the details ot' the extensible standard for carrying electric wires Without departing from the principle of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An extensible standard for supporting electric wires and similar purposes, comprising a supporting-post, an independent frame provided with a holder or clamp for the device to be supported, anda screw-threaded rod resting loosely against one of the abovementioned parts and carrying a nut which supports the other of such parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An extensible support for electric Wires and similar purposes, comprising a post, an independent frame provided with a clamp or holder for the wire or similar device, and an intermediate section resting loosely upon the post and supporting the frame, and mechanism for adjusting or extending the intermediate section in the direction of its length, all substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
3. An extensible standard for electric wires and similar purposes, comprising a post, a superposed frame for carrying the wire or similar device and guided by the post, an inter- IOO set-screw, an intermediate section composed of a screw-threaded rod and a nut resting loosely against the upper end of the post and the horizontal arm or the frame, and bevelgearing carried by the nut and arranged to rotate the screw-threaded rod, substantially as and for thev purpose set forth.
