To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE XV. PELTON, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Domestic Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved domestic press arranged vertically. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same arranged horizontally. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, with the Fig. 4 is a detail section through the hanger-casting, showing the split nut. Fig. 5 is adetail of the end of the hanger.
This invention is an improved domestic press for extracting liquids from solids and compacting materials; and its objects are to "provide a press which can be readily taken apart, wherein the presser cylinder or vessel may be arranged either vertically or horizontally and readily removed from the supporting-frame to empty its contents, and wherein the presser-screw shaft by the employment of a split nut can be adjusted up or down, removed or replaced, without turning, until it is desired to compress the material.
The invention th erefore consists in the novel construction of the supporting stand or bracket, the presser-cylinder, its hanger, the split nut or adjustable screw shaft clamp, and in other novel details and combinations of parts, as more fully hereinafter explained.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A designates the supporting bracket or casting having a horizontal recess adapted to receive the edge of a table and a bottom screw-clamp A, of ordinary construction, by which it is secured in place where desired. From the top outer corner of saidsupport project two diverging upwardly-curved arms a a, which together describe about a semicircle, looking at them both vertically and horizontally. Said arms terminate in horizontal diametricallyopposite heads a, provided with horizontal slots a and have shoulders a in the upper edges of the arms just behind heads a and in line with slots a B designates the bifurcated cylinder-hanger casting having a pair of diverging curved legs B B, together describing about a semicircle and each having a pair of projecting lugs B B on the outer faces of their ends, which engage the slots a and shoulders a of arms a a, and support the hanger thereon, as shown in the drawings. Lugs B always engage slots at when the-parts are assembled and are confined therein by pins a passing through vertical perforations in heads a.

0 designates the presser-vessel, preferably a cylinder formed of sheet metal having an exterior reinforcing-ring O at its upper end, provided with depending ears C riveted to the sides of the cylinder, and an annular shoulder O at its upper edge, the top edge of the'cylinder being turned over the edge of ring into this annular shoulder, as indicated in Fig. 2, and soldered therein. The ring has diametrically opposite projecting lugs 0 which can be engaged with slots B in legs B and suspend the cylinder, as indicated in the drawings. The lower edge of the cylinder is reinforced by a band 0 over which the edge of cylinder is turned, and in this band and edge are cut a number of inverted-L-shaped slots 0, which are engaged by-a correspond ing numberof lugs c, projecting from the periphery of a hoop 0 which is thus removably secured in the bottom of the cylinder. Tov this hoop may be secured a cloth or metal strainer, or on it may be placed asolid plate, according to the kind of work to be done.
0 is a follower-plate, which fits easily within the cylinder.
D is the presser-screw shaft threaded exteriorly and playing through a guide-opening b in the tang of hanger 15, its lower end bearing on follower 0 when the presser is in use, and it may be turned by a double handle D on its upper end.
In the tang of hanger Bis a transverse opening 1), intersecting opening b at right angles, and in this opening rest .the opposite parts d d of a screw-clutch,which can be thrown into or out of engagement with the shaft D. Each part d consists of a half-nut d, a shank (Z and a projection d The half-nuts lie opposite each other in opening b, and their shanks ICC (Z project outward and are pivoted to cars?) on the extremities of united bracket-arms b formed on or secured to the shank of hanger B, as shown. The parts (Z are normally held apart bysprings (Ziinterposed between shanks d and brackets The projections d are at the side opposite the shanks (Z and d is a catch pivoted on one projection and having a notch (1, adapted to engage the opposite projection when the half-nuts are forced to-' gether, and thus retain the same in engagement with shaft D, which can then be forcibly screwed up or down. The strain on the shaft is transmitted through half-nuts cl direct to hanger B, so that the entire strain, however great, is distributed directly between the hanger and cylinder.

hen it is desired to have the cylinder horizontal,both sets of lugs B 13 0f hanger B are engaged with slots (L as indicated in Fig. 2, thus holding the hanger in a horizontal position with the months or slots B uppermost, its legs extending oppositely to arms a and not lying thereover. The cylinder C then lies horizontal and is supported on a rest A on the rear upper corner of support A, as shown. In this position the cylinder-can 'be readily lifted into or out of place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the support, the bifurcated hanger supported thereon, the presser-cylinder removably connected to the bifurcations or legs of said hanger, the screw-shaft playing through guides in said hanger, and the split nut connected to said hanger and engaging the screw-shaft,aud a plunger, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the support having diverging upwardly-extending arms slotted at their ends, the hanger having lugs engaging the slots of the arms, and a screw-shaft guide'opening, a split nut mounted in the hanger, a screw-shaft, and a pressencylinder and plunger, substantially as specified.
The combination of a support, the bifurcated hanger connected thereto having a screw-shaft guide-opening, thehalf-nuts resting and moving in an openingin said casting, the screw-shaft playing therethrough, and a cylinder having lugs on its ends removably engaging slots in the legs of the casting, and a plunger, substantially as specified.
4:. The combination of the hanger, the cylinder, a suspending-ring having lugs engaging the hanger and an annular shoulderfitted to the top of the cylinder, the edge of which is turned over into said shoulder, and a strengthening-band at the lower end of the cylinder over which the metal of the cylinder is turned, said band and lower edge of cylinder having a series of L-shaped slots, with the bottom band having a series of lugs adapted to engage the said slots, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a hanger having 1ntersecting openings with the clutch-pieces 61 (Z, having half-nuts (1 and shanks (1 the latter pivoted to brackets projecting from the hanger and the former resting in one of the openings, and a catch for holding said parts together, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the support having upwardly-curved arms a, at, having slotted heads a, with the hangerhaving curvedlegs provided with outwardly-projecting lugs and interior-inclined slots, and ascrew-shaf t guideopening, the screw-shaft playing through said opening, and the cylinder having lugs'engaging the slots of the hanger, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the support having upwardly-inclined diverging arms provided with slotted heads-on its front upper corner and a rest on its rear upper corner, with the bifurcated hanger having lugs on its legs ongaging the slots of the arms, a presser-cylinder removably connected to said hanger and supported on said rest, a follower, the screwshaft playing through the hanger, and a split nut attached to the hanger and engaging said shaft. substantially as specified.
8. The combination of the hanger having screw-shaftgu ide-opening b intersecting opening 1), and bracket-arms b at one side of said opening, with the half-nuts cl, restin gin opening 1) and having shanks d pivotally connected to the extremities of brackets 11 the springs for throwing apart said nuts, and the catch for locking the same, substantially as described.
9. The combination of the support having up\ vardly-inclined curved and slotted arms, the hanger having curved legs provided with exterior lugs removably engaging the slots in said arms and also having inclined slots in the inner faces ofthc legs, the presser-cylinder having lugs removably engaging said slots and supported thereby, the follower, the screwshaft playing through a guide-opening in said hanger, the pivoted screw-clutch pieces playing in an opening in said hangerand adapted to engage the shaft, the springs for separating and the catch for locking the same, all snbstantiallyas and forthe purpose described.
