SWIVEL-STAND FOR BARBERS CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 473,397, dated April 19, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST KERN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Swivel-Stands for Barbers Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This is a device for the support of the chair and foot-rest when these parts are either connected or disconnected in such a manner that they may be readily turned so as to face any direction and so as to be locked in such position.

3 is a fixed base, secured to the floor by screws 4. or otherwise.

5 is a circular upwardly-tapering swivelpost.

6 is a spider or frame, whose hub 7 is recessed to provide a downwardly-flaring opening to fit the swivel-post 5, so as to turn freely thereon.

8 are the horizontal arms of the spider, four in number, one for each of the four legs 9 of the chair.

10 are boxes in which fit the ends of the chair-legs. These boxes surmount and are secured on the ends of the arms 8, so as to be in proper position to receive the legs 9. The

boxes are fastened by bolts 11, that pass through slots 12 in the arms, so that they are adjustable in position to suit the legs of the chair.

At the base of the turn-post 5 on the base 3 is a circle of cogs 13, with which engages the inner end of a curved lever or dog 14, hinged in bearings 15 to the spider and having at its outer end a treadle or knob 16, upon which a foot may be placed to disengage the lever or dog from the cogs 13 and allow the support to be turned.

17 is a horizontal bar extending across from leg to leg at the front of the spider.

18 are parallel bars having at the ends vertical flanges 19, forming recesses in which rest the feet 20 of the foot-rest. These bars are attached at their inner ends to the cross-bar 17 by bolts 21, passing through slots 22 in the cross-bar, allowing the transverse adjustment of the bars 18 upon the bar 17 to accommodate them to foot-rests of different widths. These bars 18 have overlapping side extensions 23, one of which is channeled to receive the other extension. The extensions are secured together by a bolt 26, passing through a hole in the channeled extension and through a slot 27 in the other extension, so that they are adjustable upon each other for the widening of the frame composed of the two bars 18, with their extensions 23. The outer ends of the bars 18 are supported on casters 24 to allow the chair and foot-rest to be easily turned in the swivel 5 7. The parts 5 7 of the swivel are connected by a kingbolt 25.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the fixed base 3, having a circular swivel-post 5, a spider 6, having a recessed hub 7, fitting the swivel-post, and horizontal arms 8, provided with boxes at the outer ends of the arms for receiving the legs of a chair, and a king-bolt 25, by means of which the spider is pivoted to the fixed base, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the fixed base 3, having a circular upwardly-tapering swivel-post 5, a spider 6, having a recessed hub 7, providing a downwardly-flaring opening fitting the swivel-post, and horizontal arms 8, provided with adjustable boxes at the outer ends of the arms for receiving the legs of a chair, and a king-bolt 25, by means of which the spider is pivoted to the fixed base, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the fixed base 3, having a circular swivel-post 5 and a circle of cogs 13 at the base of the swivel-post, a spider 6, having a recessed hub 7, fitting the swivelpost, and horizontal arms 8, provided with boxes at the outer ends of the arms for receiving the legs of a chair and with bearings 15 on one of the arms, a lever 14, journaled in the bearings and engaging the cogs, and a king-bolt 25, by means of which the spider is pivoted to the fixed base.

4. The combination of the fixed base 3, having a circular swivel-post 5, a spider 6, having a recessed hub 7, fitting the swivel-post, and horizontal arms 8, formed with slots 12 at their outer ends, a king-bolt 25, by means of which the spider is pivoted to the fixed base, the chair-leg boxes 10, adjustable over the outer ends of the arms, and the bolts 11, by which the boxes are adj ustably secured to the ends of the arms, substantially as described.

5. The combination of the fixed base 3, having a circular swivel-post 5, a spider 6, having a recessed hub 7, fitting the swivel-post, and horizontal arms 8, provided with chair-leg boxes, a king-bolt 25, by means of which the spider is pivoted to the fixed base, the crossbar 17, connecting the front horizontal bars, having slots 21, the parallel bars 18, having rest-leg flanges 19 and overlapping side ex tensions 23, pin-and-slot connection between the extensions, bolts 21, by which the parallel bars are connected to the cross-bar, and casters for supporting the outer ends of the parallel bars, substantially as described.

6. The combination, in a chair-support, of the swiveled frame or spider with adjustable boxes 10 to hold the bottoms of the chair-legs, a dog 14 upon the swiveled frame, a fixed base 3, having the cogs 13 and to which the frame 6 is swiveled, a frame with side bars 18, with flanges 19, adapted to hold the feet of the foot-rest 2 and adjustably connected at the inner ends to the swiveled frame, extensions 23 on the side bars 18, adjustably connected together, and casters supporting the outer ends of the bars 18, substantially as set forth.
