COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 473,360, dated. April 19, 1892.
Application filed June 16, 1891. Serial No. 396,499. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EMMERSON SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oommodes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined chair and commode; and one of the objects of my invention is the provision of a commode which can be produced at a much lower price than commodes heretofore known, and thereby rendered practical and useful.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a commode which will consist of very few parts, which will be of small and compact size, and will not disfigure the appearance of the chair to which it is applied.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a commode which can be quickly put in condition for use and which will be airtight, comparatively, so as to entirely prevent the escape of any offensive odors therefrom.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a commode constructed substantially as illustrated, described, and specifically defined and distinguished by the claims.
In order that the construction and application of my commode may be readily understood and its advantages fully appreciated, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a chair with my improved commode applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the commode detached with the cover and door opened. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view of the commode. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a chair of the form shown or of any preferred form, having an opening B in the seat thereof covered by a cover 0, and on the under side of the seat having guides D, in
which the commode may slide.
The commode may be connected rigidly to the bottom of the chair or it may be made to move in the guides on the under side of the seat.
The commode consists of a box E, having the open end E for the admission of the chamher-vessel, having the guide or cleat E and the strip E fitting in the cleat at the closed end of the box, and having the outer edge E inclined inward, for apurpose to be explained. To the open end of the box is hinged the door F, having the inner strip F for closely fitting the end of the box and sealing the same and the eye-and-hook fastening F for securing the door. At the sides of the box are strips G, which engage the guides on the chair when the box is made movable, and to one side of the box is secured the plate H, fastened to the box preferably by staples or eyes, or I may secure two of such plates, if desired. To the top edge of the box are secured the strips J, one of which isinclined on the under face at J and has the guiding-eye J In the-cleat of the box is arranged the slide or cover K, the inner end of which is inclined upward at K and makes a tight joint with the inclined edge E of the strip E and prevents the escape of odors at that point, and the outer end of the cover carries a strip having the inclined edge K fitting snugly against the inclined edge J of the strip J. It will be seen from this construction that the box is comparatively airtight and that it is impossible for any odors to escape from the box, and this is a feature of great importance.
To provide for the easy and quick opening of the cover, I employ a cord L, having one end connected to the cover, from thence passing through the eye J and then through the guide M on the chair, where it is brought to the front portion of the chair within easy reach of the user.
It will thus be seen that I provide a commode which is the embodiment of simplicity and cheapness, which will prevent the escape of odors therefrom, which will not disfigure the furniture, which is compact and can be easily transported, and which is thoroughly useful and practical.
The plate H is to prevent matter from entering the box, or guides the matter to the vessel, and is of vital importance.
I claim as my invention- IOC 1. A commode consisting of the box having one end open, the door hinged to said end and having the strip for tightly closing said opening, the strip carried by the box and having the inclined edge, the cover fitting in said box and having the inclined edge adapted to form a tight joint with the inclined edge of said strip, substantially and for the purpose described.
2. A commode consisting of a box having one end open, a door hinged to said end having the tight-fitting strip, the fastening for securing the door, the strip carried by the box and having the inclined edge, the slide or cover having the inclined edge, forminga close joint with the inclined edge of the strip, and the cord connected to the cover for opening said cover, substantially as described.
