Description

a N 1 HA. 0w Em A QR A No. 473,227. Patented Apr. 19, 1892,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADELBERT C. HOPKINS, OF ASHIPPUN, XVISCONSIN.
RAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,227, dated April 19, 1892. dpplication filed October 23, 1891. Serial No. 409,620. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADELBERT O. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofAshippun,in the countyof Dodge, and in the State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railways; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a combined railway tie and chair; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a railway embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a transverse elevation, partly in section, on line 2 2 of the preceding figure; and Fig. 3, a similar view, partly in section, on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a railway-tie that forms part of my invention, thistie being preferably made from suitable metal cast in a mold. As shown, the upper side of the tie has two series of teeth I) 0 formed thereon, and these teeth are faced in opposite directions from the center of said tie.
The other part of my invention consists of a rail-chair made from suitable metal cast in a mold, this chair being shown as provided upon its under side with two series of teeth d e, that face in opposite directions and engage the teeth on the tie when said chair is in position for use. The chair is also provided with slotsf in the direction of its length, and passed through these slots are the shanks of set-screws g, that engage tapped openings in the tie, the heads of the screws being in frictional contact with the upper face of said chair.
The engagementof the teeth on the tie and chair prevents the track from spreading in either direction, while the slots in said chair 5 allow the latter to expand and contract under various conditions of the temperature.
The rails O are held in place on the chairs by means of lips h, forming part of said chairs, that overlap the bases of said rail 5, and
those chairs at the meeting-point of two rails have their lips provided with lateral extensions 2', that lie along the webs of the aforesaid rails, and are bolted thereto, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, whereby I do away with 5 5 the necessity for the fish-plates that are commonly employed to splice meeting rails. The rails are placed in position by sliding them into the chairs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a railway-tie provided upon its upper side with two series of teeth faced in opposite directions, a chair cast in one piece to present a pair of rail-engaging lips, as well as teeth that correspond with those of the tie, and suitable means for uniting said tie and chair, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a railway-tie provided upon its upper side with two series of teeth faced in opposite directions, a chair castin one piece to present teeth corresponding to those on the tie, and rail-engaging lips having lateral extensions and suitable means for in the county of WVaukesha and State of VVis- 8o consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ADELBERT C. HOPKINS.
