PORTABLE ROOF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 473,128, dated April 19, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDMUND RANKIN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Roofs and Siding, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved portable shed erected, a few of the upper boards being removed; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view showing-more clearly the improved hooks; Figs. 3 and 4,detail side elevations of portions of the supports, showing the hooks in position, the hooks in the latter view being slightly modified in construction; Figs. 5 and 6, detail perspective views of the two forms of hooks shown, respectively, in Figs. 2 and 4.

This invention has relation to that class of portable sheds and roofs covered by Letters Patent No. 451.572, granted to me on the 5th day of May,1891; and it has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction shown in said patent, whereby the devices shall be rendered more substantiahcheaper, and easier of erection and removal, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

This invention has particular reference to the hooks employed to hold the boards or siding on the rafters.

In the drawings, a designates the inclined supports or rafters pivoted together in pairs in a suitable manner at their upper ends and connected together by the usual adjustable stays 1), whereby their pitch may be varied, as fully described in my former patent. The rafters or supports carry the hooks c, that support the boards (1. The preferred form of hook is that shown in Fig. 5, wherein it is shown constructed of a single piece of wire bent into shape, forming a loop c',which embraces the rafter, the two ends of the wire being bent downwardly and formed into U- shaped books 0 for the reception of the lower edges of the boards. The loops 0' are preferably formed rectangular in shape, so as to embrace the rectangular rafters, and their outer ends when in place on the rafters project outwardly from the outer edges of the rafters and extend down'over the upper edges of the boards below, thereby serving to hold the lower boards in place and also to form sockets or hooks for the reception of the lower edges of the upper boards. These hooks may loosely embrace the rafters, so as to readily slide up and down tl1ereon, whereby theyniay be adjusted to accommodate boards of different widths, or the loops may be stapled to the inner edges of the rafters, as at c' in Fig. 3. In either case the hooks will have a free vertical swinging or pivotal motion on the rafters, so as to enable them to be readily ad justed to position.

Instead of carrying both ends of the wire of the loops out and forming them into two hooks c, as in Fig. 5, one part of the wire may terminate at the side of the rafter and only one hook c" be employed, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.

The purposes of this invention, its variety of uses, and the manner of erecting and taking it apart are fully set forth in my former patent, and therefore need not be set out here.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination,with supports a, of a series of hooks 0, carried by each of the supports, said hooks each consisting of a wire bent into a loop o which embraces the support, the ends of the wire being carried outwardly on opposite sides of the support and formed, one or both, into depending hooks 0" beyond the outer face of the same, and the boards (1, each having their lower edges resting in the series of hooks 0" next below and their upper edges under the series of hooks next above, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of a support, the pivoted hooks embracing the same and projecting outwardly therefrom and formed into depending hooks c", said hooks 0 being beyond the outer face of the support, and inclined boards cl, having their lower edges resting in said hooks c" and their upper edges resting under the series of hooks above, substantially as and for the purpose-described.
