UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEONARD BAILEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
RIBBON FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,847, dated April 12, 1892.
Application filed April l0, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD BAILEY, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbons for TypelVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
My invention relates' to the class of ribbons that are specially prepared for use on a typewriting machine by being treated or saturated with an ink that remains moist for a considerable time; and myobjectis to providearibbon of this class that will have the ends iinpervious to the ink used in treating the ribbon and thus leave such ends after the Aribbon has been inked in proper conditionfor handling without danger of soiling the hands.
My improvement consists in a type-Writer ribbon having one or both ends prepared with a material that renders it impervious to the ink used to coat or load the ribbon, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawing, the figure repersents a type-Writer ribbon rolled or folded up and with one end extended and illustrating the method of embodying my improvement in a ribbon.
The type-Writer ribbons are made of any suitable and desirable material, as linen of a tine grade or silk, and a strip of any desired length and width is saturated or loaded with the proper supply of an ink that will remain moist fora considerable length of time. Such a ribbon is to be placed on a type-Writing machine by hand, and in the handling the operator is put to great inconvenience and loses considerable time by the ink staining the fingers and hands when such ribbon is covered with ink for the whole length.
Serial No. 270,162. (No model.)
In the accompanying drawing, the lettera denotes a type-writer ribbon of any suitable fabric or material, the greater portion thereof being inked in any usual manner. The ends b b', however, before such inking are coated or treated with a preparation thatwill not be dissolved by the ink and that prepares the substance of the ribbon so that but little or none of the ink can remain on this prepared surface. I find it possible to use a solution of gum shellac in alcohol and to apply this to one or both ends of the ribbon Wit-h a brush. The ribbon, when thus prepared, is then inked, and although this prepared end may rest in contact with the main body of the ribbon when the latter is folded or rolled up in the usual manner for storage or transportation, but little, if any, of the ink remains upon the prepared ends of the ribbon. Such a ribbon is comparatively clean and is easily handled Without soiling the hands of the operator in putting it into or removing it from the machine. y
I do not limit myself to the use of anyspeciflc gum or material for preparing the ends of the ribbon for the purpose herein described and claimed, as any equivalent gum or other soluble substance dissolved in a vehicle that is impervious to the ink will be sufficient to enable my invention to be practiced.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a type-Writer ribbon having one or both ends coated or saturated with a material thatsrenders theJ parts so treated impervious tothe ink used forinking the ribbon, all substantially as described. f
LEONARD BAILEY.
