WINDOW-BLIND.

SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,592, dated April 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HIRAM B. SWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Window- Blind, of which the following is aspecification.

My invention relates to Window-blinds, and especially to inside sliding blinds, where unusual thinness of blind is required.

It consists of certain details of construction for securing stationary slats within such blindframe, as hereinafter set forth.

My invent-ion is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts.

Figure 1 is a section of a stile for a sliding blind embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a blind, showing stationary slats secured in position within the adjacent stiles. Fig. 3 is a section of stile with several stationary slats connected therewith at one end.

In the drawings, A is a section of my improved stile for blinds. It is bored in the usual well-known way, as for rolling slats. It is further provided with longitudinal raised portions 0 along the margin of its edge adjacent to the slats sufficient to make a shallow depression B along the edge of the stile to receive the ends of the slats Dand secure them closely together and also prevent them from turning on their tenons. The slats are made inthe usual way, and the tenons may be round or square, but should snugly fit the holes in the stile instead of loosely, as in rolling slats. A furrow e may be out along the edge of each slat to admit of closer lap, if desired.

I am aware that pivoted slats inserted in a blind-stile board to receive the same are old;

also, that the furrow e is not new, and such I do not claim.

My invent-ion consists in the combination of parts shown to provide an improved stationary slat-panel for blinds, so as to have a snug tenon for each slat, to give additional strength to the blind-frame, and also to secure each slat rigidly in horizontal position independently of the next adjacent slat, so that the series of slats will not dip nor contract or shrink by drying out, as is the case where the stationary slats are supported by each other by means of a groove in the blind-stile. The novel feature which especially accomplishes these advantages is the longitudinal raised portion 0 along one or both margins of the stile edge adjacent to the slat-tenons, bearing against the outer edges of the slats, and thereby securing them rigidly in place, while the tenons secure the same horizontally Within the blind-frame.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a blind-frame, the combination, with the stile A, bored to receive the tenons, of the slats fitted thereto,- said stile further provided with a longitudinal raised portion along the margin of its inner edge to bear against the outer edges of the slats and secure them rigidly in place to form a series of stationary slats within the blind-frame, substantially as shown and described.
