LORENZO DWIGHT AND ARTHUR A. JEPSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WASTE-WATER GATE FOR WASHING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,530, dated April 12, 1892.
Application filed August 29, 1891. Serial No. 404,142- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LORENZO DWIGHT and ARTHUR A. JEPSON, citizens of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Waste-Water Gate for Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a cheap and simple means for the rapid discharge of Waste water from washingmachines.
We accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end view of a washing-machine with our waste-water-gate attachment. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of the same,
showing its connection with the washing-machine and valve closed.
We prefer toconstruct the shell of our wa ter-gate A cylindrical, with tapering end B. A rectangular discharge-opening or water-way C is formed at one side with a projecting flange D for connecting to the washing-machine, and the connection may be made with screws where the washing-machine is of wood, or by soldering, if of metal.
The valve F is tapering in form to fit the tapering end of the shell in which it is seated, and is cast with two lugs G G, to receive the lower end of the stem or piston H, the latter being cut away, so as to easily occupy the space between the two lugs, in which position it is held by the pin I, thus forming a loose pivotal connection with the valve at that point.
The shell is provided with a shoulder J, screw-cap J packed with an india-rubber gasket and metal washer K up through which the stem passes, terminating in a button L, and when the cap is screwed down a Watertight connection is formed in the cap both with the shell and stem.
In operation the water-way or rectangular opening being on a line with the bottom of the washing-machine, the contents will be quickly discharged when the stem carrying the valve is raised to the full extent. It will be seen with what great facility and ease we discharge the waste Water from the washingmachines, and dispense with the ordinary vexatious cork or Wooden plug common on such machines.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The herein-described waste-gate for washing machines, consisting of the cylindrical body A, having a water-way with an opening in the side near the inner end, and the flange D for fixing it in place, and provided with a tapering seat around the outlet, the tapered valve F, fitted to said outlethavinglugs on its top, the valve-rod H, fitted loosely between said lugs, the cross-pin I, and the screw-cap J with an opening for the rod, and the packing to form a water-tight joint around the rod, combined for operation as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals.
WVitnesses:
O. W. M. SMITH, S. B. ISAACS.
