POCKET-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,390, dated April 5, 1892. Application filed March 3,1892- Serial No. 423,650. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST PAULS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scales for Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a scale for pocketknives which is formed from a plastic substance and provided with sheet-metal bolsters embedded in the plastic substance and embracing the ends and portions of the sides of the scale.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my scale, showing its inner surface. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same, showing its outer surface. Fig. 3 is a face view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section in the plane 06 33, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section in the plane or.

In the drawings, the letterA designates my scale for pocket-lmives,which is formed from a plastic material-such, for instance, as celluloidby means of a suitable mold, one-half of which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

B B are the bolsters, which are stamped up of sheet metal and embedded in the plastic material from which the scale is formed, so as to embrace the ends and portions of the sides of the scale, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. In order to enable the bolsters totake a firm hold in the body of the scale, I provide the same with holes Z) Z), punched inward and provided on their inner edges with burrs c c, and when said bolsters are placed into the mold and the plastic substance is introduced and permitted to set the burrs c 0 become embedded in the plastic substance and the bolsters are firmly retained in position. The edges d d of the bolsters are bent inward, (see Fig. 5,) so that they become embedded in the plastic substance and assist in retaining the bolsters in position. By these means I am enabled to form scales for pocketknives which are handsome, light, durable, and very cheap.

What I claim as new, and by Letters Patent, is

1. A scale for pocket-knives, which is form ed from a plastic substance and provided with sheet-metal bolsters embedded in the plastic substance and embracing the ends and portions of the sides of the scale, substantially as described.

2. A scale for pocket-knives, which is formed from a plastic substance and provided with sheetmetal bolsters embedded in the plastic substance and provided with burrs c c for retaining them-in position, substantially as described.

3. A scale for pocket-knives, which is formed from a plastic substance and provided with sheetmetal bolsters embedded in the plastic substance and provided with inwardly-bent edges 61 d for retaining them in position, substantially as described.
