Description

. (No Model.)
C. D. MGGRATH.
INHALER.
Patented Apr, 5, A1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
cYRUs D. MCGEATH,
OF ANTHONY, OHIO.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 472,176, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed December 19, 1891. Serial No. L115.602. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUS D. MGGRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anthony, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Inhaler, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invent-ion is to produce a simple and convenient device whereby medicated air or vapor maybe inhaled in the treatment of various throat and lung affections; and in carrying out my invention I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
The drawing is a vertical central sectional elevation of my invention.
The inhaler is to be used in connection with a lamp, and it may be permanently or removably attached thereto.
The reference-letter A designates the lamp, preferably a spirit-lamp, of suitable construction, over the top of which is fitted a hood or chimney B transversely, through which chimney extends a cone-shaped tube or cylinder C C', the part C being preferably of zinc and the part C of copper. To the small end of this cone O maybe attached a rubber tube D, that is placed in the mouth when using the inhaler, or the end of said cone may be placed in the mouth, and at the other extremity is formed a recess, as at E, to receive a Vessel F, in which the medicinal agent is placed, and from which vessel extends a pipe G,that passes centrallythrough the cone C C', being held by perforated diaphragms c c and terminates at the outer extremity of said cone.
The operation of the device may be stated to be as follows: The medicinal agent having been placed in the vessel F and the lamp lighted, the cone C C isheated, as Well as the air Within the same and the pipe G. The heating of this pipe G causes a vaporization of the liquid medicinal agent in the Vessel F, which passes thence through pipe G into the mouth in the act of respiration. Oommingled with this medicated Vapor is the heated air that also tends to assist the action of the medicine in its alleviating and curative effect. The inclined cone prevents the stopping of pipe Gr by saliva.
It is preferred that the hood be of one metal, such as copper, and the cone of two other metals, such as Zinc and copper, so as to, if such be possible, establish a galvanic current between these parts; but the machine may be made of any suitable material or metal, or combinations of the same.
Having thus described my invention, WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The inhaler described, composed of the lamp, cap, or hood over the same, cone passing transversely through said cap vor hood and terminating at one extremity in a small mouth-piece and at the other in an open recess to receive a vessel with said vessel having pipe extending from the interior thereof through the cone and terminating at the outer end/thereof, substantially as shown, for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OYRUS D. MCGRATI-I.
