S. THOMASON. SAD IRON HEATER.
No. 472,149. Patented Apr. 5, 1892.
NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
SAD-IRON HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.472,149, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed June 19, 1891. Serial No. 396,803. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SUE THOMASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Itasca, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sad-Iron Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sad-iron heaters, the objects in view being to provide an attachment for use in connection with an ordinary cooking stove or range to utilize to the greatest degree the heat radiating therefrom, and to avoid exposing the faces of the irons during heating, thus protecting the same from cold drafts, and also providing fora thorough heating of the faces of the irons without the necessity of tightly closing the room in which the ironing is done and rendering the same uncomfortable to the ironer, as is the case where the irons are placed unprotected on the topsof the stoves.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective of a heating attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, the same being in position upon a stove.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practice I provide a metal receiver elliptical in plan and comprising the bottom 1, the surrounding side wall 2, and the top 3, the side wall being provided with an encirclingfiange 4. Handles 5 are located upon the top and the shape of the device as a whole and its proportions are such as to adapt it to sit within the opening in a stove-top usually occupied by the two plates or lids and the crosspiece.
At each side of its center the top of the device is provided with a rectangular opening 7, each transverse edge of each opening having notches 8 formed therein. At one side of each opening and in line with the transverse edges pairs of bearing-lugs 10 are located, and in each pair is loosely journaled the cranked or bent ends 11 of a pintle 12, to which is secured a swinging lid 13 wide enough to cover the rectangular opening, but not sufficiently wide to cover the notches.
In operation the cross-piece and two lids of the stove-top or range 14 are removed and the device set in the opening thus formed, the encircling-flange resting upon the edge of the opening, thus supporting the device above the bed of coals within the stove. One or more irons are introduced into the rectangu tected from any drafts of air liable to cool them or reduce their temperature, while the handles may be slightly cooled by such air. In this manner the necessity of closing the windows and doors during the operation of ironing for the purpose of preventing a consequent cooling thereof is avoided, and the room may be kept atatemperature agreeable to the operator;
At one side of each pair of openings 8 there is located a sliding plate 15 of U shape, the same having a rivet 16, passed through a longitudinal slot formed in the plate and into the top of the heater. By adjusting these plates over the openings the latter are adapted to fit various sizes of irons and thus retain the heat within the heater. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described improved heater for irons, the same consisting of an elliptical ironreceiver adapted to fit within a stoveopening, the upper edge of which is provided with a surrounding flange adapted to rest upon the edge. of the opening and thus support the receiver depending below said opening, a pair of openings formed in the top of the receiver, each of said openings being provided at opposite edges with iron handle-receiving pairs of notches, a pin extending from the top of the receiver opposite one of the notches of I00 each pair, a slotted U-shaped plate mounted for movement upon each of the pins and having its opposite branches lying at opposite sides of the adjacent notch, and hinged doors located over each of the openings in the receiver and between each opposite pair of notches, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SUE THOMASON.
