To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, DAVID A. LISK and TRISTRAM D. BROWN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Clifton Springs, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Sealing Shipping-Cans; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forn1 a part of this i 5 specification.

This invention relates to improvements in shipping cans for shipping and handling such liquids as are liable to evaporate; and it consists in providing such a shipping-can 2o withastopper which will automatically open when the spout of the can is lowered by turning said can upon its pivot and be closed when the spout of the can is locatedwithin the shipping-case, said stopper being also adapted to cover the vent-tube located within the can and spout thereof, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed outin the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is avertical sectional view of our improved shipping-can, showing the can in an upright position with the stopper closed in full lines and in a lowered position with the spout open in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved case and can closed.

A refers to the shipping-case, which is made of wood and is of ordinary construction. At the upper end of the case and adjacent to 40 the front edge of the top is located a bracket (1. The can B is pivoted within the case, as shown, the pivots being located to one side of the center of the can, so that said can will have an eccentric movement in the case.

The can has a spout O, which is provided with a discharge-nozzle dot the shape shown, and to the rear 'end of this nozzle is pivotally secured a valve or stopper D, having a weighted end or arm E beyond the pivot. Within the spout and body of the can is secured a venttube F, said vent-tube terminating within the can above the normal liquid level when the canis either raised or lowered.

The operation :of this improved valve or stopper is as follows: When the can is lowered in the case to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,.the weighted end of the arm carrying the stopper will strike the bracket a and automatically remove said stopper from the spout, and when the can is 6c turned upon its pivot the bracket or dependstrip will engage with the stopper and hold the same firmly upon the spout, thereby sealing the can.

'We are aware that prior to our invention it has been proposed to pivota can eccentrically within a case and provide the upper end of the case with a cushion against which the discharge-spout of the can will abut, and we donot claim such construction as our invention.

We are also aware that it has been pro posed to pivot a spouted can eccentrically within a case; but in such instances the spout either projects from the case when raised or does not project beyond the case when lowered. W'ith our improvement when the can Bis turned upon its pivotthe nozzle or spout is projected beyond the casing, and when the spout is in a vertical position it is entirely within the case, and the can is automatically sealed-by a stopper which also seals the venttube.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 8 5 ters Patent, is

1. The'combinatiomwith a case having a depending bracket secured to the upper end thereof, a can pivoted eccentrically within the case and provided with a swinging stop- 0 per which is adapted to engage with the bracket when the can is swung within the case, so as to close said can, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the shipping-case 5 A, having a depending bracket attached to the upper front portion of the case, a can eccentrically pivoted therein, said can having a spout O and nozzle 0, the spout and nozzle being adapted to be located entirely within the case when elevated and projected beyond position to cover the spout and vent-tube the case when lowered, and a swinging stopper pivoted to the nozzle, against which the lower end of the bracket abuts when the can is elevated, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with a shipping-case having a bracket a, .a can eccentrically pivoted with'n the case, and a spout having a stopper vwith a weighted arm pivoted thereto, said when said stopper is in engagement with the bracket, substantially as set forth.

5. In combination with a shipping-case, a
