IMPROVEMENT lN PLATFORM-SCALES.
Specification forming" part of Letters Patent No. 17,165, dated April 4,1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CQNKLIN, of Yorktown, Westchester county, New York State, have invented a new and Improved Scale; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an additional lever to act on the outer end of the beam of a scale, so as to raise and lower the outer end at the same time the inner end is moved, and thus preserve the beam horizontal as it is moved up or down.
To enable others to make my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The figure represents an end elevation of my improved scale, the improvement consistin g in the addition of the lever A to the parts of an ordinary scale.
A red, B, is movahly attached by one end to the lever G and by the other to one end of the lever A, that turns on its pivot D. The
outer end of the lever A, by means of the loop E, supports the outer end of the beam F. When the lever U is brought down to G, the rod 13 carries down the inner end of the lever A, raising the outer end and raising the outer end of the beam, and if the rod, levers, and loop be properly proportioned in length and in respect to their points of attachments, the rising and falling of the outer end of the beam will exactly correspond with that of the inner end.
Other forms of a scale might be represented, as in case of the ordinary city weighers, portable scale, and in other cases, but the principle is the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the lever A, with the other parts, 0 and F, of a scale, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
