SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,356, dated March 22, 1892.

To all whom t may concern: I designates the side wall,which is securely 5o Be it known that I, HENRY W. GIBBoNs, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horticultural Buildings, ot which the following is a specication.

,My invention relates to an improvement in horticultural buildings.

The object of my invention is to provide an arrangement of the roof and side walls of a building so that I may expose a portion of the eaves-gutter to the heat from the interior, as will hereinafter be more fully described.

A further object is to provide a gutter of such construction that it will be capable of connecting the top of the side walls with the eaves of the roof and also keep all moisture from having access to the vupper parts of the walls.

A still further object is to provide an arrangement Which shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive, and at the same time durable'and effective.

In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a transverse section of a portion of a building, showing my invention; and Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a portion of the eavesgutter.

A designates one of a series of posts, which may be constructed of metal or Wood, as may be found convenient. The post is provided with a iiange ct formed thereon. The top of the post has secured thereto a purlin or connecting-bar D, to which is attached by any well-known and convenient meansagutter E. The above-mentioned purlin extends the entire length of the gutter. The bottom of the gutter E is provided with flanges e e, extending downward a short distance. They are preferably formed integral or in one piece with the gutter. The roof in the present instance is represented as consisting of the rafters B, glazing-bars G, glass H, and header F. The rafter B is shown as secured to the post A by means of a bracket O. The header F extends longitudinally of the building and also covers the inside edge e2 of the gutter E. The edge e2 is shown in the present instance as being embedded in the header F.

fastened to the outside of the posts A and spaced therefrom so as to cause the top of the wall to be a greater or less distance outside of a vertical line dropped from the edge of the roof instead of being a distance inside of such line, as has heretofore been common. The upper parts of the walls are secured to the posts A by means of castings a and angle-irons z', screwed or otherwise fastened together. The flanges e e of the gutter embrace the top of the side wall, makingasnug fit With the same, so that moisture cannot get access to the top of the Wall, and the .gutter thereby forms an air and watertight connection between the roof and the side wall.` It will thus be seen that there is a portion e3 which is exposed to the heat from the interior, thereby preventing the water from freezing in the gutter and clogging the same.

While I have shown and described my invention in connection with horticultural buildings, it is obvious that it might be employed to advantage in buildings devoted to other purposes.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a building, a post, aroof supported at one side upon the post, a side wall spaced from the post and roof, and a gutter connecting the roof and side wall, the said gutter being provided with a recess for the reception of the top of the side wall and supported upon the side wall, substantially as set forth.

2. In a building, a side wall, a gutter provided with flanges to embrace the top of the Wall, and a roof the eaves of which are in contact with the inner side of the gutter, substantially as set forth.

3. The gutter comprising a trough-shaped body portion with one of its upwardly-extending sides adapted to engage the roof and having flanges depending froln the outer surface of its bottom for engaging the upper edge of a wall, substantially as set forth.
