ATTORNEYS United States Patent CAP BLOCK AND GUTTER Martin Branham, Pound, Va. Filed May 1s, 1956, ser. No. 585,741 1 claim. (cl. nstiism The present invention relates to cap blocks and gutters, and more particularly to a device of this type which is adapted to serve as a crown for a masonry wall.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a combined cap block and gutter for masonry walls which will completely eliminate water damage to'the wall as well as icing conditions prevalent in cold climates.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cap block having the gutter area therein provided with a metallic lining to eliminate water seepage therethrough.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cap block and gutter combination having means to communicate the gutter with a lead oif downspout.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cap block and gutter of the class described above which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use and apply, and durable in service.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention shown applied to a wall.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of Figure 1 taken along the lines 22, looking in the direction of the -arrows.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section taken along the 1 line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 3 of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an interlocking corner block construction.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral indicates generally a masonry Wall having a corner 11. The wall 10 is a building wall and terminates at its upper end in a.
` wall 10 and provided with a pair of side walls `14 and 15. A bottom wall 16 extends between the side walls 14 and 15 and is provided with a longitudinally extending upwardly projecting rectangular recess 17. The recess 17 delineates a pair of spaced parallel depending flanges 18 and 19 which are adapted to overlie the upper side edges ofthe wall 10, as best illustrated in Figure 3.
The block 13 is provided atthe upper edge of its upper sideedges 14 and 15 with a pair of parallel outwardly and upwardly curved bulbous shoulders 20 and 21. The block 13 is provided with a longitudinally extending ice 2 trough 22 which-is positioned between the shoulders 20 and 21 and projects downwardly into the block therebetween.
A metallic shield 23 covers the surface of the trough 22 and is curved about the bulbous shoulders 20 and 21 so as to tightly secure the shield 23 on the block 13.
A corner block, generally indicated at 24, is constructed quite similarly to the block 13 with the exception that the recess 17a'turns at right angles to itself to iit the top of the wall 10 at its corner 11. The trough 22a likewise turns at right angles to extend parallel to the top of the wall 10. An opening 25 extends perpendicularly through the block 24 and the trough 22a to provide an exit for Water in the trough 22 and the trough 22a. The wall 10 is provided with a downspout opening 26 to cooperate with the opening 25 in the block 24. A'metallic sheath 23a completely covers the trough 22a and is secured in the same manner as the shield 23.
In completing a wall 10 using the blocks 13 and 24, the blocks 13 and 24 will normally be laid up with mortar to provide a tight seal, although it should be understood that the blocks 13 and 24 can be used without mortar.
In Figure 4 a fragmentary view of a modilied form of the invention is disclosed wherein a block 13a is provided with a curved shoulder 20a which curves inwardly to provide a shoulder 27 under which the edgeof a metal shield 2317 engages to secure the shield to the block 13a.
In Figure 5 an innerlocked corner block construction is disclosed wherein a block generally indicated at 30 is provided with a plurality of core openings 31 extending `vertically therethrough and a plurality of webs 32 extending between side walls 33 and 34. Moisture barrier vents 35 extend vertically through each of the side walls 33 and 34 in alignment with the webs 32. A L-shaped opening 36 extends inwardly through the side wall 33 adjacent the end wall 37 of the block 30 and is adapted to receive the tongue 38 from a cooperating block 39 to lock the blocks 30 and 39 against movement relative to each other. j
Mortar, generally indicated at 40, joins the blocks 30 and 39 together as well as securing the blocks 30 and 39 to the constructed portions of the wall.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that numerous other modifications and structural adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
A cap block and gutter for building walls comprising a longitudinally extending body having a generally iiat lower face, spaced parallel depending lianges projecting below said fiat lower face in aligned relation to the opposite side edges of said body and defining a generally rectangular lower wall top engaging trough, spaced parallel upwardly and outwardly curved bulbous shoulders extending upwardly and outwardly from said body longitudinally therewith, said body having an arcuate top trough extending longitudinally Vthereof between said shoulders, right angularly extending depending lianges joining at one end thereof said first mentioned flanges, said right angularly extending flanges defining a second generally rectangular lower wall top engaging trough positioned at right angles to said first mentioned generally rectangular lower wall top engaging trough, and right angularly extending bulbous shoulders extending integrally upwardly and outwardly from said body and joining at one end thereof said first mentioned shoulders, said right angularly extending shoulders being offset and spaced from one another to define a second arcuate trough ex- Y tending transversely to said first mentioned arcuate trough at one end of said body, and a longitudinally extending metallic sheathhaving a right angularly disposed end por- 3 tion supported in and covering said arcuate troughs, said sheath having its opposite side edges clamped in encompassing relation about said shoulders, and having a portion thereof underlying the outwardlyextending portion ofsaid shoulders, and locking said metallic sheath in tight engagement with said block.
