Description

(No Model.)
. F. W. & E; P. PARSONS.
TOOL HEAD'FOR IRON PLANERS AND SHAPERS. No. 471,189.
Patented Mar. 22
NITED STATEs FREDERICK WV. PARSONS AND ERNEST P. PARSONS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-FOURTH TO ARTHUR H. PARSONS, OF SAME PLACE.
TOOL-HEAD FOR IRON PLANERS AND SHAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,189, dated March 22, 1892,
Application filed September 21, 1891- Serial No. 06,311. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that we, FREDERICK W. PAR- SONS and ERNEST P. PARSONS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new Improvements in Tool-Heads for Iron Planers and Shapers, of.
which the following is a full, clear, and complete description.
The nature of our invention relates to a toolhead so arranged as to have two tools adjustably attached thereto, one tool cutting and the other one clearing the material while going forward, and while going backward the action being reversed, as herein fully set forth and shown.
It is not deemed necessary or expedient to show a planer or shaper in the drawings annexed hereunto, as our improved tool-head may be applied or attached to any form or design of planer or shaper, as will readily be seen from the following specification.
That the inven tion may be seen and fully understood by others acquainted with the art, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure l is a front view of our improved tool-head. Fig. 2 is a side or edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the back plate. Fig. 4: is a cross-section on line mac, Fig. 3. Figs. 5,6, and 7 are detached views of one ofthe aprons used in connection with our improved tool-head, and hereinafter fully explained and set forth.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the drawings and specification.
In the drawings, A represents the front plate, which is bolted to the rear plate B by the bolts a a a C63. The bolts to and a work in the segmental slot 19 in the front plate A and are stationary in the rear plate B, while the bolts a and a work in the segmental slots b and b of the rear plate and are stationary in the front plate. The curved slots 1) and Z) of the rear plate B have the same center as the curved slot 1). The rear plate is attached to an ordinary saddle, and the saddle slides on a cross-arm in the ordinary manner. The cross-arm is indicated by dotted lines 2 2 and 3 3 in Fig. 1. Two aprons C and D are pivoted to the front plate. The apron C is pivoted at 0 near the lower part forward of the tool-clamping surface, and apron D is pivoted at d near the upper portion thereof and in the rear of the clamping-surface.
The tools E and F, Figs. 1 and 2, are made fast to the aprons at any desired position by means of the bolts e e e e and clips ff, which hold the tool F, while the bolts g g, clip h, and the set-screws it hold the tool E. The apron C is shown detached in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, Fig. 5 being a front view, Fig. 6 a side view, and Fig. 7 a view from the under side thereof. The tool E passes down through the opening it and is held rigidly in place by the set-screws i 2', which are threaded in the holes Z and m, Figs. 5 and 7. The apron C is pivoted at the pivot-hole n, Fig. 6.
It will readily be seen that while the tool F is cutting the tool E will be raised clear of the material in the direction of the arrow No. 1, Fig. 2, owing to the location of the pivot c, and while the tool E is cutting the tool F will be raised in the direction of arrow 2, Fig. 2, resulting from the location of the pivot cl. Thus by the use of our improved tool-head much time, labor, and expense are saved, as the tools E and F maybe set so as to just lap, and they will then out both ways alternately.
The rear plate B, as hereinbefore stated, is attached to the saddle, the front plate A being swiveled thereto, as shown by dotted lines 4 in Figs. 1 and 2. The swivel-bearing of the rear plate is also shown at 0, Figs. 3 and 4.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a planer or shaper, a tool-head composed of a front and rear plate swiveled and adj ustably bolted together, the front plate being provided with two aprons C and D, to which are bolted two tools, the two aprons being pivoted in the manner described, whereby one apron gives the clearance to its tool alternately to the clearance of the other, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Two aprons C and D,pivoted at c and d, as described, in combination with two tools and rear and front plates operating conjointly with a planer or shaper, arranged substantially in the manner as and for the purpose specified 3. In atool-head for a planer or shaper, two aprons pivoted to the front plate thereof, the apron C pivoted in front of the tool-bolting surface of said apron and the apron D pivoted in the rear of its bolting-surface and of the pivot of the apron C, in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a tool-head for a planer or shaper, a front and a rear plate havinga swivel center bearing arranged as described, in combina-
